Eastern Tiger Swallowtail: State Butterfly of Georgia!Read the article this discussion is about
This archived discussion is "read only". « Previous 1 2 3 Next » » Naomi_Mathews - Terri, how exciting about the Swallowtail caterpillars! That's just wonderful! And you have photos of them, too! YES -- you must learn how to use your scanner -- they really are fun and not hard to learn (I can say that now, after struggling over mine!). And you've probably had those babies there every spring and didn't really know it, right! Now you'll know what to look for, and will be able to see them emerge -- if you can spot their chrysalis. This opens up a whole new world of "butterfly watching" for you, Terri! Yeah!I've heard about your strange weather patterns on CNN news -- it's really been crazy all over the midwest and east coast this spring. Unbelievable! I think we're finally settling into a spring pattern here. I'm so glad your butterfly bushes did so well. Mine are doing great too! My Columbine now has flower buds forming already! I'm so excited to see the first blue and white blossoms from this "Colorado" Columbine. I have a lot of seeds, will scatter them soon as I get out into my yard. I did have a most wonderful birthday, Terri. Thank you for your added good wishes here. It was a very relaxing day, and our drive was simply beautiful. I hope my digital photos all turned out -- I'll download them tomorrow and see what I got. Maybe I'll post some on a "spring" photo addendum page IF I ever get time! (-; Take care, and dont' work too hard. How is your new flower bed coming along? Be sure to take "before and after" photos! Talk to you soon! (-; -- posted by Naomi_Mathews » terri_in_pa - So glad.......... that you had a nice relaxing birthday!! Hope your pictures come out! Altho im sure they will! When did you get the Columbine seeds?? I scattered last years crop last summer, after they were ripened. I do that alot with many types of seeds, as it sometimes takes a full season before they flower, and i dont want to waste any time! My Columbines are pink ones, i dont think i have any other color, but may be pleasantly surprised, as each year i usually am! I havent done a thing to the new bed since i started it weeks ago. The weather has not cooperated with me, and i still have to finish spring cleanup with the rest of the beds! Either its too windy, too chilly or raining, or even snowing here! I do have about 11 or 13 holes dug, but need to get the rest of the lawn ripped up. I placed a piece of left over pond liner on the grass hoping to kill it and make the job of ripping it up easier. I move it occassionally to continue killing the grass. It is a big area, and now have set the date of completion for the end of May. Originally i wanted it done by the end of this month, but that wont be happening here! Wish i could remember where i saw the little caterpillar larve of the swallowtail!! for the life of me i just cant remember! This year i will keep my eye out for sure! -- posted by terri_in_pa » Naomi_Mathews - Hi, Terri! I got my Columbine seeds last summer. When my cousin came to visit and go camping with us, they brought me the plant AND a "bunch" of seeds from their mature columbines of last summer. I'm not sure they will blossom this year, but since they're perennial, I will be happy if they bloom next year! When we spoke on the phone yesterday -- he said they have about 18 or more of these Colorado blue/white ones growing now, and that they're very prolific and self-sow easily each year. The only other Columbine I have is one that I "store-bought" last summer, and it's burgundy and cream colored. It's also up and growing, but not nearly as fast as my blue one! I just know I want more of them, as they have lovely foliage, and their flowers are so unique. I hope mine bloom a lot and self-seed for next year. I'll send you some photos IF/when they do! I'll be downloading my digital photos soon. Took a bunch yesterday! Also, I had about 70 misc. photos I downloaded on Sunday. It's so great having this little digital -- I've saved a TON of money on film and developing! I'm going to take a "photo drive" one day soon and take pictures of every variety of flower I can find along the way. Also, we're going to the Seattle area over the weekend where we'll be taking in the Master Gardener Plant Sale at the Univ. of WA with my daughter who is an "almost" Certified Master Gardener now! Then to a botanical garden in Bellevue, which has a BUTTERFLY HOUSE! More photos to take! Gotta run -- come back soon! -- posted by Naomi_Mathews » jerrib - Naomi I am late to your birthday, and you who so kindly poured tea last visit! Hope it was a happy one. I will definitely check in on your site to see what's new -- I love your Washington articles, too! You'll have to bring your readers to "my" side of the Cascades soon! Oh, I just thought of a very special piece I'd LOVE to have you do, Jerri! And it's right here in my home town, too. Shall I make you guess? Or shall I email my thought to you? (-; Actually, there are TWO -- now have I piqued your interest? Not that you don't find a great plenty on your own, that is. Thanks for the visit and your kind comments -- do come again. I would love to visit your neck of the woods. I've been debating on where to go next, and it's time to visit the east side. I certainly am interested in what you'd like to see. I appreciate it, but didn't have my teapot on for you. Maybe next time?I sent you an email just now -- will look forward to hearing from you! Who knows, perhaps we will soon be reading something wonderful about Eastern Washington -- the "dry" side of our beautiful state! Seen any more butterflies, Jerri? I saw another sulphur flying forever at my neighbor's house this afternoon! Guess the nectar must be sweeter on the "other side of the road!"
