» JBoustead - no name lillies

Bill,
my no name lilies, pink and white, when should their seeds be planted.
I collected the seed, put them in a white paper bag and forgot to plant them. The lilies flowered before X-mas.
Can I plant them now?

» Ixia - planting times

I have pasted part of the article for you to read as this will explain it for you.

If the seeds are a bit old they may not be viable but it is worth planting them anyway.
Welcome to part 1 of this series, which is about Lilium.

Propagation of Liliums is quite easy as long as you understand the simple principles of growing seed.

There are two types of Lilium seed:

Epigeal (easy and quick)
Hypogeal (hard and slow).

"EPIGEAL" With some of the easy species you will get flowers in less than eighteen months and seeds will send up a leaf immediately after planting. Some specialists planted epigeal Lilium seed in late winter as it gives them more growth time before the coming season

"HYPOGEAL" Slow germinating seeds require a warm period of about three months to make them germinate, (summer). Then, they need a cool rest time, again, approximately three months (winter), followed by another warm period to start leaf production (spring). The perfect time to plant for Hypogeal germinators is around mid summer.

It's still a bit early yet for Lilium seed.
Hope this helps.
Nice to hear from you.

» KimHan - Enjoyed!

Hi, I really enjoyed the article on Lilium. Actually, I came here from Renie's discussion page, and am so glad I did. First, your grandchildren are soo cute! I live in a city, and don't have much of a garden except in containers on our balcony. But I love reading about growing flowers. My husband gave me an Easter Lily in a pot, and I want to keep it going. Should I repot it? It's so beautiful, and I'd like to keep it going.

I enjoyed browsing your topic. I'm just a reader, not a CE or anything, but I love to read! Will return here for more. Lovely topic!

Hi Kim Han,
it's loveley to hear from you.
Yes the grandchildren are such a joy! They keep me young - always uo to some mischief.
So good to hear you enjoed the Lilium article. I will be publishing part 2 but after the next article which be one Watsonias that can become weedy.
Your Easter Lily sounds nice.
Yes, you can repot it - do it after it flowers and give it some nice new soil and a bit of fertiliser. They don't like to be out the ground too long.

I welcome you to my page. Don't hestitate to ask questions. If I don't know I will find the answer for you.

» Ixia - Lilium Question

In response to message posted by Ixia:

I received this message for help:
I viewed your photo album of plants . I was really impressed with it .
Can you give me the name of the plant on number #15 ? I was wondering
if it was a Madonna Lilly . I have been trying to find them every where
on the web . Your photo shows it to be smaller than the ones I have seen
. I am not sure if it is a Easter Lilly or a Tiger Lilly I am looking for
as I really am not sure what the differences are .
Can you help me ?

Thank you ,
Vicki Barnes

» Ixia - Madonna Lily

In response to message posted by Ixia:

Hi Vicki,
nice to hear from you.
No 15 in my album is a Lilium hybrid I photographed at a recent flower
show.
What you are looking for is the species Lilium candidum, which is known as
the Madonna Lily.
I have attached a photo of it for you.

Here is a web page which will tell you about the Madonna Lily.
http://www.gardenguides.com/flowers/bulb...

I can send you some more links to Websites. Let me know if you want them.
The Madonna Lily is very easy to grow and should be available in nurseries,
usually while it is in flower, or you will see it listed in plant
catalogues. Have a look in some of your local garden magazines for growers.

Here is an image of it:

» Ixia - Madonna Liy - thank you

In response to message posted by Ixia:

Bill ,
I want to thank you so much for your e-mail , with all the information .
I was able to find them within a couple of seconds . I now have my order
in for 3 Madonna Lilly to plant in the fall . I was to late to be able to
get them to plant at this time . The nurseries here didn't have any , I
guess it was to late in the season .

Again thank you so much for your time & response .

Bill,

Liliums are going ballistic here as well. LA hybrids, Asiatics, Bellingham Hybrid and trumpet lilium in bud or bloom...... L. canadense is the only straight species at this stage (tenuifolium already over). Everything is running later this year than last year for some reason (which is surprising given that we're so much hotter than usual, which I would have thought would have brought things on early)
