Potential slayers

Okay, I'm a bit confused and I hope that someone out there can help me understand something.

I was under the impression that because Buffy died at the end of season one she was no longer a part of the slayer lineage (for lack of a better word) and that's why Kendra came along and after she died we got Faith.

It was also because she died the first time that when she died saving the world from Glory a new slayer didn't come along and the scoobies had to use that creepy BuffyBot. Faith is still alive somewhere so there is still another slayer.

So I'm confused about how, with all these new potentials, Buffy and the scoobies are saying that when and if Buffy dies again one of them will take her place. Why didn't one of them replace her last time she died?

Did I miss an explaination somewhere? Is Faith alive or dead?

Or is Joss just messing with the story line so he can goof around with these doe-eyed fifteen year olds playing with pointy sticks?

If anyone can explain this to me I would be grateful. Thanks

Joss has said in interviews that the Slayer line now runs through Faith and that Buffy's death won't trigger another Slayer, but the only way I know that is from interviews. I don't remember them ever saying anything about this one way or another on the show. As far as what I remember seeing on the show itself, it is possible that there is only one Slayer line and that it runs through Faith, but it is equally possible that another new Slayer will be called upon Buffy's death.

The Scoobies didn't know about the existence of either Kendra or Faith until each of them showed up in Sunnydale, so it's possible that there's another Slayer out there right now and that Buffy and her friends just don't know about her yet. If there is another Slayer out there, it's even possible that the Watcher's Council didn't know about her, since I don't think they ever knew about Buffy's death at the end of The Gift and they therefore may not have been looking for her replacement.

Also, just because Joss has said things publicly does not mean that the characters know what is going on in Joss's head. When Kendra showed up, Giles said it was unprecedented, so the characters may just be very confused as to how the whole thing works.

You also have to keep in mind that Joss lies all the time. He made a public statement that there would not be another new Slayer after Kendra died, yet Faith showed up fairly early in season three.

These are just some of the possible explanations I've come up with, because it hasn't been explained on the show as of yet. I've seen some accusations to the effect that the fact that this hasn't been cleared up for the viewers yet is sloppy writing. For all I know, that may very well be true. But since Joss frequently throws things into the mix that aren't fully explained until later in the season, I'm not going to make any judgements about where this is going or what any of it means until the season is over.

It's true what you said about Joss tossing odd things into his shows with the explainations of them coming later and usually i just sit back and wait too.

I was curious as to whether or not I'd missed a statement in an episode somewhere explaining all this because it seems like such a turn around from previous info.

It may or may not be explained. who knows maybe faith'll show up again. I'm just hoping it's not sloppy writing because that would be dissapointing from a show that has always had some of the best writing and creative back bone I've seen on TV.
