Hi mom - I think, and I believe RacheAshwellll would agree with me, EVERYTHING does not have to be distressed to be "Shabby Chic". Rachel frequently gives old pieces a shiny (semi gloss) paint finish with no need to distress the corners, edges, high spots. Some of the old yucky stuff passed off as S.C. wouldefinatelyly be too shabby for "Rachel's world". I say leave it nice and newly painted and admire your work! Just a suggestion: shabby chic colors would be pale pink and pale (kind of celedonon) green, nothing too dark, just FYI. Sounds like you have a nice cabinet! Enjoy it! Carol

I have a confession to make...I was looking for some hints on "re decorating my lovely dressing table to a 'shabby chic look" after fruitless attempts I gave up..but this site came up for some reason (probably the word shabby..and to tell you the truth..I was about ready to log off..but I could not believe it when I saw what you had to say.... and "guess what!" I have been there ..with you...with the FRIDGE business..my fridge almost fell forward with the amount of crap that was attached to it.
I thought I was alone in the world with this supposedly "insignificant trivial compliant" that I was suppose to 'live with'. But it almost drove me to distraction. I thought it an erosion into my working area.i.e. the kitchen.
We talked about iterer well..I complained)and it seems that the fridge and a magnet (when u travel round a bit) "is (quote) the only safe place for stuff". Guys have an affiliation to a fridgeafterallll it holds their beer, and in most cases their life is stuck to the outside ..so we had to compromise...or better still I decided..we would only put current messages on the fridge..and the rest would go into a file draw or a office board.. so far it hasn't worked because he still insists on sticking every bit of shit to the fridge...but: it is all in the training I think..like a dog..persist and you will see results..

I see this board isn't that active, but I had some ideas about getting stuff off the fridge. I had the same problem, only I was as much to blame as anyone.

I think the main problem is that people are USED to the fridge being the family bulletin board - it is in the center of everything, the main family gathering place, and everybody shows up there several times a day. The trick is to replace those functions in a more acceptable way.

Some ideas:
Put a magnet board someplace better, near or in the kitchen, but not right in view when you walk in. Pick out a nice big frame. Get a decent weight sheet metal (not aluminum... take a magnet to check!) and have it cut to size. Paint it a great color and put all your favorite magnets on it. Bulletin boards just aren't the same! Make it part of "family central", a place to pay bills, answer phone calls, check the calendar, etc. The trick is to make it BETTER than the fridge. Then don't nag, just keep moving the stuff to the new place, and pretty soon everybody gets it.

I keep my calendar, etc. on the INSIDE of a cabinet door. If you have room, the best place is one where you can keep the cabinet open without interfering with walkways, other cabinets, etc. You can leave it open all you want (and your guy can see all his "stuff"), then close it when you want to "tidy up", when company comes, or when you are sick of it.

If pictures and memorabilia are the problem, display a few nice things in a more acceptable way. Reserve a spot (a picture shelf is good) for a few snapshots in frames you can easily change out when new ones come. Then put the rest in a different place, like another magnet board over your guy's desk, or a simple scrapbook he can add to. I'm guessing he uses the fridge because A. it's convenient, and B. he doesn't have any other place to put his things. If you give his stuff the same TLC you give your own memories, you will get eighteen thousand brownie points! He will LOOOVE you!

If junk still accumulates on the fridge, "reserve" the spot by filling it with something else. Get some art you like and stick it on a big magnetic sheet. Upholster a piece of foamcore and put that up. Go ahead and use a few favorite photos, only frame them, or arrange them on a mat board. If the materials are light enough, just about anything will stick.

If he subverts or resists, take a picture of the kitchen and show it to him. Suddenly all that important stuff looks like the black hole of crap in the middle of a nicely decorated kitchen.

Last ditch effort (this is how my fridge got cleaned off): Have children. Give them a stool to stand on. Stuff destroyed. Fridge no longer safe. Problem solved.
