Bodhi Day: Anniversary of Buddha's EnlightenmentRead the article this discussion is about
This archived discussion is "read only". « Previous 1 2 Next » » yeshe - Thanks for your comments Hello Kathryn, Marlyn, Dan, and Lance:Thanks for the posiitive feedback. You people are so nice, I'd even take negative feedback from you! Marlyn, your temple exemplifies that delightfully eclectic spirit that seems so widespread in Buddhism. Dan, I will read all the Christian Humor over the next few days; I'm almost catching up to the pace of this semester. Have you seen the effort-to-be-humorous Zen Koan Generator at my Dharma Bulletin Board site: Anyway, Buddhist Humor is definitely going to be my March topic. Thank you all for writing. -- posted by yeshe » red_activist - small town Bodhi Day I wanted to thank everyone on their ideas for how to celebrate Bodhi Day. Growing up in an almost purely Christian town (I would say my highschool is 88% Christian, 10% atheist, and 2% everything else) I make up my own traditions. This year is only my second as a Buddhist, and the only other Buddhists in my town I know of are Tibetian, while I am Zen. I don't even know if other Zen Buddhists celebrate Bodhi Day, but I do to teach others of my religion. What I did last year... and hope to this year... is walk through my high school handing out small trinkets (last year it was beads) and telling a little to everyone who accepted a bead about what this day means.-- posted by red_activist » Dan_Ellsworth - Re: hello In response to message posted by pman123:I concur only in the effect that the discussion (pointing to the article) is now at the top of the list. As for the content of the message: "No affense"? I am not detecting spiritual depth behind the complaint; certainly not a benign detachment. I, though not Buddhist that I know of, will show this degree of detachment: If the preceding message is removed, mine may be too, without further consultation. A criticism without specifics fails to inform or inspire. -- posted by Dan_Ellsworth » Kio - Bodhi Day I am very new to this site, and I am very glad that I found it. I found the articles very interesting and easy to understand. I am also a fairly new student of Buddhism living in a 90% Christian town. I have learned most of what I know about Buddhism from books. And, now that I have found this site, I can also learn from all of you. Even that p something person that didn't like the article.I hope that all of you enjoy a peaceful Bodhi Day tomorrow. All of your responses were very interesting and insightful. I look forward to reading your future responses. -- posted by Kio » Kio - Re: small town Bodhi Day In response to message posted by red_activist:Your are very insightful for such a young man. I wish I had your bravery. I asked my family to celebrate with me and caused a lot of static. I figured after 36 years of Christmas, one Bodhi Day wasn't too much to ask. Oh well, I guess this is just another great learning experience isn't it. I am celebrating my first Bodhi Day tomorrow. Buddha's enlightenment is truely something to celebrate. I understand the hardship of being the only Buddhist (or just about) in town. In some ways, though, it is just more challenging and educational for us. good luck and nameste Ki'o -- posted by Kio » sha_do - Re: Re: hello In response to message posted by seebass:I'm not Buddhist myself, but I do think outside the box at times. It is hard in this world at times to know about "affending" the truth is... when it is not always taught to us, let alone being in the dictionary. Perhaps one way to look at it is if one has an "affinity" with God or alike then there is truth, and then allow to be "awakened." Tell me something does somebody actually knows what "nameste" means, other than the word itself being associated with "abundance?" Commenting on the article, one must caution putting judgement on others and what they do as we have our own sins to deal with, whether they be Buddhist/or not. I don't feel this article is meant to "harm" Buddhists in my opinion... Peace Sha_do -- posted by sha_do » rune_lund - Re: Bodhi Day In response to message posted by Kio:I wonder if Jesus approves of the customary Christmas "celebrations", or even if he approves of what passes for Christianity. I wonder if Boddhi Day reflects in any way the Buddha Mind. Is there any greater wrong to do than to take the name of a Holy man and use if for something common, mean and vulgar, or even something merely trivial or trifling or ordinary. I know seriousness like this dampens discussions and provokes flaming. People come to discussions to exercise their egos, like letting the dog out for an airing. But there is always the hope that in some group, if it is large enough, someone will find it refreshing that someone else wants to get on the track established by the Holy. -- posted by rune_lund « Previous 1 2 Next » Please follow the guidelines set forth in the Suite101 Posting Etiquette when adding to the discussion. |
