would prefer that our news media adopt the "gag" rule. I have heard stories about scores of voters who were waiting in line at polling places in California, listening to the news reports, actually leaving the polling place without casting a vote, since the election had already been decided! Same goes for other western states. We'll never know now, if those votes could've impacted the stalemate we find ourselves in.

You're right, we'll never know! Here in NZ it's a standing newsroom joke that we're only allowed to talk about the weather on election day. I guess another factor is that America is such a huge country that some polls have closed hours ahead of California and the western states...
