» powerkid - THE GOODIES

Noted in this article, is the comment that the Goodies aired in Australia at a timeslot which made "The Goodies" a children's TV show. Being one of those children that subsequently became addicted, I would truly like to thank the ABC for this decision. But I can't help but think that the BBC stuffed up! The Goodies are Television ICONS in Australia, and largely because todays 30 somethings (who are generally TV addicted) were amongst those children. Perhaps, if the BBC had of taken note of what occured in Australia, and re-run the Goodies in a similar slot, then more people could be happier for knowing The Goodies, some would be richer and the Goodies would have a Pythonesque status....Perhaps.

Despite this comment, obviously laced with mirth and sarcasm, I am deeply grateful to the ABC, I just feel it is a modern day tragedy that re-runs of the Brady Bunch happen over and over and over, while I haven't seen a Goodies episode in over ten years. Bugger.

So, in having said this, if anyone wants me, I
will be in the spleen.

» Allan_Lee - Absolutely!

I, too, grew up with the Goodies (I was allowed to stay up late to watch it on the BBC!). They were astoundingly popular at the time, but faded quickly once the programmes ended.

The BBC has a curious attitude to popular programmes - it either tries to pretend they don't exist... or alienates the producer so much he takes it to another broadcaster... or the bosses kill it themselves and then run endless retrospectives about it decades later. That's very strange!

While appreciating all the BBC does that is good, I do occasionally think they are their own worst enemies.

And I'm fascinated that, even months after I posted the Goodies article on the Suite101 site, it still regularly tops the ratings chart. Has anyone any idea why this should be?

The article says about Australia :-

"...The ABC re-ran all the episodes it had bought from the BBC almost continuously, enabling new fans to come to know and love the series...."

TRUE, it did. In the 80s and early 90s. But unfortunately, the ABC has not shown The Goodies for at least 5 or 6 years, and its fans are eagerly awaiting (though seriously doubting) its return.

It's disheartening to know that kids who are 16/17 have never even heard of The Goodies. I'm 22.

They were truly a great part of, not just British television but, the history of television. They should have the same standing as Monty Python, considering the two shows were connected.

I think I might start a petition, of which I'm sure there are many.

Mali Kasid.
