Go Ahead! Nurse That Toddler!

» pyrangel - RE:Go Ahead! Nurse That Toddler! Shawna,I was just surfing thru the latest articles--and yours peaked my interest. You are absolutely correct--and your article is a wonderful testament to your strength of character. I am long past those days of nursing--my youngest is 23 years old---but when he was a baby, I felt I stood alone. I heard woman say, "I nursed my baby for 2 months". and they thought that was an accomplishment. My oldest child was nursed for 12 months--but then he preferred a glass to hold. My youngest was nursed for over two years. I was hospitalized when he was 2, and refused to go in unless they'd let my son stay with me. (My Mom took care of him during procedures.)I refused meds so I could continue to nurse. I received everything from raised eyebrows to nasty comments--but I never regretted my descision. When my son was at the age when he was just starting kindergarten, someone mentioned pierced nipples in his earshot. His comment---"But how will she be able to nurse her babies?" Actually, I think this fosters a better respect for woman---breasts are not there just to make our sweaters look good. Joan -- posted by pyrangel » teresasmom - Re: RE:Go Ahead! Nurse That Toddler! In response to message posted by pyrangel:Joan, I'm always so glad when I hear of others who also nurse their children into toddlerhood! I can't imagine making my daughter stop nursing just because of societal pressure to do so - it's really sad. Your son's remark about pierced nipples is both funny and beautiful. How wonderful that you were able to instill in him such great respect for breastfeeding! And I agree with you - when more women are nursing for longer periods of time, then maybe breasts will be seen as not just being ornamental. Thank you for your comments! -- posted by teresasmom » Star85girl - Re: RE:Go Ahead! Nurse That Toddler! In response to message posted by pyrangel:This is absolutely right! I am all in favor of breast feeding for as long as the child wants to (though I don't yet have kids). Shawna, I stumbled on your topic - realized I knew your name from Themestream - I can't believe how many people there are here whose names I recognize! Keep up the good work, I hope you'll go see my topic (hobby writing) sometime. -- posted by Star85girl » teresasmom - Re: Re: RE:Go Ahead! Nurse That Toddler! It's getting harder and harder to deal with all the comment and criticism I get. The other day a four-year-old asked me why I still nursed! I told him "Because she likes it and it's good for her." That is pretty much what I tell everyone - at least the little boy said "Oh! Cool!" Wish everyone was as easy to convince. Thanks for the much-needed support.-- posted by postum » teresasmom - Re: Great article Reach around and pat yourself on the back right now - 27 months! That's SOO great. Congratulations! And every time someone asks you why you're nursing, you're helping to spread the word that nursing doesn't have to end at 6 months. Even if someone seems to have a negative reaction, you've planted the seed in their minds.I'm so glad that you were supported by the article! That's why I'm writing this column. Thank you for your kind words! -- posted by teresasmom
