Kevin,

Welcome to Kids' Korner. I'm so glad that you stopped by. Please take time to join in the fun when you have time. We have contests, great links, puzzles, coloring pages and a lot of fun here in Kids' Korner.

I'm glad that you enjoy spending time with Thunder. I'm sure he's very smart. If I lived nearer to you, I'd adopt him, but I live in Canada.

The new building sounds like it's terrific. Glad all the animals have more room. If I ever get down your way, I hope to meet your Grandma.

I hope to see you around Kids' Korner. You are a very special visitor.

Caitlyn has gone back home to Massachusetts, but before she left she gave me the answer to the riddle:

Who eats at underwater restaurants? Scuba diners!

Hi Joy,

I like your new topic. And I'm glad that you have a new shelter for the animals. Ten years is a long time; I'd say you have folks who are patient and persistent.

Now what songs do you sing to the dogs? "How Much Is That Doggie In the Window?"

My husband and I are owned by a Rat Terrier who is now six (I can't believe it!). He's a great dog. Very smart and has a lot of personality. He has the most fun when we visit my mother and he can play with her chihuahua, Dolly Cricket. What a pair! <img src=http://www.suite101.com/files/topics/897...> Here's a photo of them when they were both younger and thinner. Dolly has grown up now and is much taller (and wider!), but when this picture was made she liked to take the shortcut and go right under Biscuit.

OK, that's enough about my family.

Scuba diners. tee hee. Cute.

Bye,
Linda

In response to Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Great Topic! posted by Fort_Spunky:

Your article brought back a lot of memories for me. I worked at my local Humane Society for two years and I loved it and now I miss it.

I remember those mornings taking the animals to the vet in my car to get spayed and neutered.

The funds, unfortunately, is low for a lot of shelters. The amount of "things" that need to be taken care of is unbelievable.

I worked in the restaurant business for 13 years and to be honest, I Feel that the public treated me worse in the shelter. They blamed "us" for the animals being there and blamed "us" for the euthanizing.

All of this has inspired me to write a book about animals, but I don't know what I truly want to focus on within the book. There is soooo much to talk about when it comes to animals...and animal shelters. But I have been keeping a file and I put articles and research away every time I come across it.

OK I am rambling.

Good Columnsmile

The shelter actually got its start in the corner of a pet store in the early 90's, then moved into the rickety building. After ten years of fundraising, lots of nice people, and a loan, we happily moved in to our own new building.

The song I sang was just something I made up on the spot and probably only dogs could appreciate it. smile

I love the picture of your two. Little terriers are probably my favorite, guess that's why I have 3 of them. But Chi's are a lot of dog in a small package. I remember when two of mine used to play together but now that they're older they think they're too sophisticated. smile

Many people probably don't realize how expensive or how much work it is to run a shelter. I've been with this no-kill shelter as a volunteer since it first got its start in the early 90's but I've never felt "blamed". We usually get asked how we can work there without taking all of them home. I just smile because it is hard but you get used to it, although all of us do have quite a few pets of our own. There are those who get angry when we can't take in everything they bring us but they don't realize how tough it is on us to turn them away too. If only all pet owners were responsible....

You're right, there's so much to say about animals and shelters. I don't think I'd know where to begin. My favorite book about shelters is called Lost and Found. When you get yours done, I'd love to read it.

If more people gave to the shelters. People often read stories about how the shelters take in large numbers of animals and do the best they can to find good homes for them. If they only know the expence of running a shelter they might open their pockets and dig a little deeper.
Great article, Joy.

Thank you, Pat. You're so right. Some people think shelter fees are too high but I think they just don't understand how much expense is involved.
