» lostcause - helping out my obese brother

I recently joined a gym and am quite happy with my results. I have learned quite a bit about weight gain and loss for my personal use but am hessitant to devise a weight loss diet for my brother who is 5'10" and 360lbs. Do you think you could steer me in the right direction before I spend/waste my money on food and supplements. Thanks

Not trying to be personal, but what's your brother made of? Is it muscle or fat? I can't answer for the muscle side but...

I wasn't that heavy, but I did reach almost 20 stones, i'm i'm shorter 5'5" I found that I dropped a lot of weight simply by exercising more and reducing the amount of snacks I consumed, over 2 years or so, I've dropped 6 stone or so. I'm still overweight for my size, i'm i'm going in the right direction fat wise.

If he's all muscle, opps, maybe some of the other guys can help.

Thanks for replying,
My brother is mostly overweight. He is big bone but he carries most of his weight around the midsection. When we were younger he looked good at about 210. He's 32 now and starting to have back problems. Any ideas are welcome.

Well there are no easy answers really. I dropped a lot of weight by increasing my cardiovascular work and reducing on the snacks a little. I found that because I put the weight on over a longer period of time, it was easier to lose it slowly rather than quickly.

It might be an idea for your bro to do a double whammy. Do a little more exercise a day and cut back on a little junk each day. I'm not being funny, but the heavier you are, the more calories you burn doing everyday stuff.

Start off simple, cut out one piece of junk a day. I don't know what he's eating but here is an example with me. I used to eat 2 biscuits a day, I dropped it to one. Result, I was eating 100 calories less a day. See if he can maybe start off with something like that.

Next add in some exercise, nothing fancy, a little walk more than normal, try for 10-20 minutes, just walking nothing special. But just make sure its something extra that he normally doesn't do. You can't count the normal waking he does.

Here is the hard part. He needs to do this long term!!

I used this to drop my weight, it's not as harsh as all those "quick fix diets" and its not gonna show massive weight loss immediately. But over time it will eat away at the pounds. Once your bro gets more confident, drop of another biscuit and add some more exercise.

Confidence is a major thing here, he'll get to a point when he'll want lose more and will want to train more, thats when he'll lose it a lot faster smile

Hope this helps, but i've found in general the Doctors are right. Exercise and healthy eating will make you lose excess pounds. As long as you support and encourage him, he'll manage it.
