» knightglo - Those who know and those who don't...

Some of my wifes coworkers and my sister are on the Atkins diet. Funny thing is my wifes coworkers are nurses, who I thought for sure would have more common sense, but then again they're also heavy smokers.
I've warned my sister so she is now on a cabbage soup diet, and she wonders why everyone clears the room when she's around!

Haha that's a new one. smile

Re your point about nurses... Well, take into cosideration that most doctors will look at you funny if you ask them what Creatine is. Or a deadlift for that matter.
Except for TV soaps, how common is ripped abs among the docs out there?

The bottom line is that while I value doctors and nurses to 110% when I need surgery or has a broken leg, I would hardly trust them with writing a contest-prep diet & exercise plan.
Everybody has their field of expertise, plain and simple.

» cja - Ketosis - symptoms?

Is nausea a side-effect of ketosis? I have boosted my protein intake recently for pre-contest prep, and suddenly today I began experiencing some nausea. I went to the drugstore for ketostix but they were all out and said there was a general supply shortage, i.e., that I wouldn't be able to get them anywhere. What other indicators are there of ketosis?

I don't think that increased protein intake by itself will induce ketosis. Have you also cut way back on your carbs?

Based on my experience, if you are in ketosis and stay there for a few days, you will see a dramatic weight loss (3-7 pounds or so).

» Ausman - Ketosis

G'day from South Australia Folks, I am a newbie to this site but I wanted to comment on this ketosis topic. For a start Protein has 4 cals per gram the same as carbs. If anyone wants the FULL story on ketosis and Cyclic Ketogenic Dieting buy Lyle McDonalds book The Ketogenic Diet. A Complete Guide for the Dieter and Practitioner it explains EVERYTHING in DETAIL. I have a copy and have been following it for the last 8 weeks dropping 6Kg (13lbs) while MAINTAINING muscle mass. Everything is explained in the book from how to calculate daily cal requirements to the optimum exercise program its the BEST book I have ever read on Nutrition specific to bodybuilding and NO I am not collecting royalties hhahaahaha Thats my 2c worth hope to check back soon for responses.

Regards Mike (The Ausman)...

In response to message posted by bill_juhasz:

One thing wrong...your body does NOT burn muscle for energy. That's just not how the body works. There are two, and only two sources that your body burns for energy, stored body fat and carbs. Muscle catabolization (losing muscle mass) happens when your muscles are overtrained. More simply, when you rip your muscle fibers, but they don't have what they need to grow back. Cutting carbs and dramatically (this is key) increasing your protein intake will not damage your muscle structure at all. If anything, the dramatic increase in protein will help new muscle formation.

From what I have researched, You DO LOSE MUSCLE if your body has no other Protiens to burn for energy. If you increase your Protien intake and decrease your Carbs (between 20-30grams/daily), your body should shift into Ketosis, which burns Body Fat in place of the Carbs, but you still need the Protien as I have said or else the body will use Lean Muscle Tissue (major body organs) instead.

I am a competitive bodybuilder. bodybuilding competitively requires two stages: the bulking stage and the cutting stage: in order to build muscle during the bulking stage calories must be kept extremely high for me around 6000 calories /day. both muscle and fat accumulate during this stage. during the cutting stage the goal is to achieve single digit bodyfat percentages around four to five percent, without losing muscle. nothing worse than a bodybuilder without muscles. ketogenic dieting cuts bodyfat like a knife while preserving muscle.ask the pros.

I estimate i have have performed this bulking and cutting cycle about 30 times during my career and during these cutting phases have lost well over a thousand pounds of bodyfat cumulatively! while gaining well over 80 pounds of lean body mass. not unusual for a career bodybuilder. maybe you should take nutrition 101 from someone who has the physique to back up the advise they are giving.
