How Can the Moon Affect Tides?

There have been several times when I was fishing that the current barely moved along , and we drifted no mor ethan a couple hundred feet in an hour or more. And there have been other times when the boat moved so quickly that we could not hold bottom with a cinder block, and moved a half mile in what seemed liked only minutes.On the days that we barely had any drift we caught fish like there wa sno tomorrow! Does anyone know what moon phase/sun phase creates teh times when we barley move at all?? I seem to think that it is a 1/4 moon period during the apogee phase - but I'm not 100% certain this is it and that I may be missing something. I'd like to plan my vacations waround this time o fthe year / month.
