» bailleycat - HELP! does anyone suffer from this side effect??

I started using the patch about 3 weeks ago and then I got my period which was extremely heavy! I usually get it light and it lasts 3-4 days instead of 5. has anyone had this problem? Also, I switch my patch every Sunday and every Sunday I get really nauseous and dizzy but this Sunday was positively the worst! I woke up and threw up 4 times and couldn't keep anything down! I've also had some cramping Has anyone gotten symptoms like this? Finally my last question, has anyone experienced any weight gain from the patch? Thank you so much for your help guys! Its good to know that there are other people in the world who can relate!

Hello,
For some reason the site wouldn't let me do a direct reply, but it would let me post. Go figure. This is a hair loss forum I stumbled upon when trying to look for information on birth control. I've never had a hair loss problem but this board is really great because all the women are so nice. There are like 10 archives too so there's TONS of information and posts. The forum currently is on the 10th archive, but here is the link for the 9th since the 10th has only like 4 posts on it. If you want to post you'll have to do it on the 10th. Hope this helps!

» tbreeze - Sex Drive

Is anyone finding that Ortho is effecting their sex drive, whether it's good or bad. I've been using the patch for about 6 months now and my drive has been completely halted. I'm never in the mood anymore and I could probably go weeks without, but before starting Ortho my drive was fine. Is anyone else experiencing these problems?

In response to message posted by bailleycat:

I have the exact same symptoms as you. I have been using the patch for 3 months now. I did find the sick feeling went away but I still get my period for 5 days and have cramps. I have gained weight too! I have not changed my diet or exercise routine. The only thing different in my life was that I started using the patch. I can totally relate to what your going through!

» ttcweb - Patch side effects and information

The patch has several possible side effects, many of which have been discussed or asked about on this discussion board.

  • Hair Loss
  • Depression/Anxiety
  • Libido Changes
  • Nausea/Vomiting
  • Weight Gain/Loss

The first thing that is recommended is to stick with the patch for at least three months to see if the side effects are temporary, which for many they are. However, if the side effects are severe, the patch should be discontinued and an alternative birth control method used (like the condom) until you can see your doctor about a different hormonal method.

The second thing everyone should do, and many have done it, is to learn as much as you can about all the different methods available, not just the one you are thinking of using. By educating yourself on all of your options, you are better able to make an informed choice, with your doctor's assistance, and find the best birth control method for your lifestyle.

When you try one method and it does not work, make *"a list of the side effects you experienced and how severe they were on a scale of 1 (very mild) to 5 (very severe). Make the list before you see your doctor about a new method, because once you get to the office it is easy to forget what you were going to say and ask about. You can discuss with your doctor the side effects you experienced, their severity, and ask about other methods that might work for you and if any similar side effects have been reported to the doctor." *From the course Birth Control: Your Options!, Lesson 4 Section 4 - Making A Choice*

If you would like to learn more about the patch and other birth control methods, how to choose a method, and the possible side effects for each different method, you can enroll in the course Birth Control: Your Options! There are currently three interactive courses available the March 3rd course, the March 31st course and the April 21st course. Of course, you always have the option of taking the course on your own, which is always open.

Hey Breanna611
thank you for your response! i was worried about my period being so long and heavy! 5 days seems like forever if your use to having it light and lasting only 3 days! I am hoping that the nauseous feeling goes away after awhile too. I'm not sure if i have gained any weight off of it and the weight i did gain i think is due to my eating habits smile Well, Thank you again for your response!

» CurliQ66 - Period stopped after first patch application

I started using the patch about a week ago and decided to go with the "First Day Start" where I apply the patch on the first day of my period. Well, by the next day my period had stopped and so far, it hasn't started again. Is this normal? I wasn't using any hormonal BC prior to starting the patch. Just wondering if my body may have gotten shocked by the onslaught of hormones.

» nickel0901 - red spots that look like bites

this is kind of gross but ever since I started using the patch i have been getting these red spots on my butt. The look like insect bites and they hurt. After a few days they turn into a bruise and it is not appealing. I defintly won't be in a bathing suit this summer. It started off with one here and there. Last week my husband counted 15 on one cheek. they always appear in the morning and I sleep fully clothed, so I can't be getting bit. Has this happened to anyone else? I need to use the patch because I can not swallow pills.

» TSK4137 - Re: Period stopped after first patch application

In response to message posted by CurliQ66:

This exact thing happened to me. I went to the doctor for my annual physical and pelvic exam and she said "You can start the patch today, you will be getting your period today" (when she took my Pap there was blood and she said she could see that I was getting my period that day).

So I went home and stuck it on and my period never came, period. (no pun intended)

So basically I had no period for 7 weeks. I just started the third patch today so I'll find out next week if all is well with my period then. I had a pregnancy test the same day as I started the patch (urinalysis) so I know that's not the problem!

I used backup contraception for the first week I started the patch "just in case" because I didn't trust the whole "you're covered" claim of Day-1 start when I didn't actually ever get my period.

I'd be interested in hearing if others had the same thing...
