If you are going to a local gym and will be losing weight, the best thing to do is to use a back up method until you weigh less than 198 pounds. The best back up method to use is the condom. It is the most effective non-hormonal birth control method currently available. When used correctly for each and every sexual act, it is 97% effective in preventing pregnancy and it also helps to prevent the transmission of STDs. So continue to use the patch, but always use a back up method until you have lost the weight you need to. Once you have lost the weight, continue to use the back up method for at least an additional 7 days just to be sure that the patch is working fully. If you need me to, I can search for the information about the failure rate of the patch for women that weight more than 198 pounds. Women that weighted more than 198 pounds were less than 3% of the total women included in the trial. What this means is that 1/3 of the pregnancies (a large number) happened to members of only 3% of the total group. This means that the effectiveness declines quite a bit for women over 198 pounds. Did that make sense? I've been on the patch for 3 months now and have had no nausea, however, each of the three months, my period has started the day that I put on the third patch and continues through my off week until I put on a new patch for my new cycle. If you weigh more than 198 pounds, you should not be using the patch. Even if you weigh less than 198 pounds, it sound to me like the patch is not working for you. There are alternatives to the patch, and it does not have to be the pill I would suggest that you do a little research on what birth control methods are available and try to choose at least two methods that you could try. Then schedule an appointment with your health care provider and talk to them about the two (or more) methods and find out which one would work best for your life style. Some options - NuvaRing (the vaginal ring), male or female condoms, diaphragm, cervical cap, Lunelle (the once a month shot), or maybe trying a differently formulated pill, which may cause fewer or no side effects compared to previous pills you have used. As long as the patch was used correctly according to the directions, the lateness of the period should not be a concern.
