» ARCHTA01 - Problems with the patch (ortho evra)

Hi all,
I wanted to write a couple of lines to describe my experience with the patch. I've been on the patch for a little over a year and in the beginning thought it was the greatest thing since sliced bread. Well, as the months went on, I started noticing moderate to severe mood swings. I'm talking MOOD swings. After a couple of months I started noticing a decline in my sex drive. When before, I was above normal... now, I could really care less. Nothing prepared my poor hubby for this (smile). My periods are strange. Sometimes they start with the 3rd patch or they last well into the 1st patch. I've never had a period last longer than 2 or 3 days. And the cramps are debilitating. Again, I never had cramps like this. And finally, the last straw was not the fact that I've had weight gain along the way (I've always worked out three times a week), BUT now I have a clear discharge from my nipples. And I had my first mammogram and breast ultrasound (I'm 31 years old) and will have to have at least one more because of "fatty-like" lumps. The only problem I haven't had is, my patch used to stick with no problem. As with any birth control, everything is not for everyone.

Tamara

» makyris - Re: ortho evra experience/period before patch free week?

In response to message posted by Starseedpyxis:

I'm new to Suite101, and I couldn't tell if anyone else has responded to your posting, but I just had to write something.

Unfortunately I don't have any answers - I wish I did! I'm currently experiencing the same thing. For the last two cycles my period has fully started during the week of my 3rd patch. I'm looking for information about this, too, and wondering if this is going to continue, if my body will eventually even out again, and if this will reduce the effectiveness of the patch. I'm wondering if an illness I had two months ago might have caused my body to get out of wack (especially as it was caused by my being unable to take my anti-depressant medication, Effexor, for three days). All in all it is a disturbing development and limits the time my companion and I are able to be fully intimate to only two weeks out of the four week cycle, which makes me sad. Our intimacy is something that adds to us feeling emotionally close.

If I've missed any posts that might shed some light on this issue, could someone please point me in the right direction? Thank you very much! : )

In response to message posted by MetroPrincezz:

I became pregnant while on the patch after having been on it for 6 months. I apparently conceived right at the beginning of the patch cycle (the first days of the first week after my period). I discovered it quickly via a pregnancy test when I was about 3-4 weeks, because I'm paranoid about that; I've had the experience where my period wouldn't start for a couple of days after taking off the patch for the fourth week, but this time my period hadn't started even by that Thursday - for me, personally, I knew that was an indicator that something may be wrong.

I weigh 190 lbs, so I know I'm pushing the limits of the patch's stated effectiveness. Also, during that month, I had forgotten to put on the first patch of the first cycle until 8am Monday morning, and then did the same for the 3rd patch and put it on at 2am Sunday night/Monday morning. However, when I mentioned this to some health care workers, they were skeptical that the few hours lateness would make a difference. I told them I just must be one of the 1% the documentation talks about that have gotten pregnant when on birth control.

I don't know if it was my fault, my weight, or just the luck of the draw, but it is something to be aware of. My companion and I additionally use VCF (Vaginal Contraceptive Film) before intercourse every time now, just to (hopefully) be on the safe side.

This does bring up another related question that someone posted earlier: Since sperm can remain viable within the body for up to three days, is it safe to have unprotected intercourse on the very last day of the last patch week? I've always wondered this....

Thanks for listening everyone. : )

» glendenny - Info on Ortho Evra Class Action

Hello,

I am in search of how to join in the Ortho-Evra class action.

I got pregnant in November after being on the patch for approx. 2 months. I believe that the information packet was very misleading, saying it is common to miss periods. I took 3 pregnancy tests, with the third FINALLY coming up positive. Obviously, I did not want another child, and I used the patch as directed, and did not have any problems with adhesion. I came to be very excited about the baby, as did my whole family.

In January, I gave birth to my still born daughter, I was 18 weeks along. (technically, she was considdered a miscarriage, but I had to be induced and give birth due to the fact that I have had previous c-sections and a D & E could have perforated my uterus.) We chose to have her cremated. Our life insurance will not cover any burial costs, because the laws in my state say she was not "born", nor did she "die". I have yet to give her a final resting place. I am only 25, with 2 other children (ages 6 and 2), we do not have any savings.

Since this loss I have suffered from Anxiety attacks, which I had never had before. I am on Paxil, and recently tried to wean off, without success (I had a psychotic episode).

I am not looking for someone to blame for my loss, but if my birth control would have worked correctly in the first place, my family would not have gone though all of this. I just want to be able to give my baby a final resting place.

If ANYONE has any information on how to join the class action, please e-mail me @ glendenny@hotmail.com

Take care,

Glenda

» Starseedpyxis - follow up to my last posts: period b4 patch-free week

Since posting my last concern about getting my period before the patch free week, I've talked to the certified nurse who prescribed ortho evra for me. Like everyone else I've talked to, she couldn't really say exactly why it was doing that; she was totally honest and said that she just didn't know. She did have a few reasons why breakthrough bleeding might occur, though. At the top of the list was stress on mind or body, such as traveling to a different country/time zone, moving in with a new room mate, getting sick, quitting smoking, getting vaginal infections, etc. I've definitely been a little stressed over the last month or so, so that could definitely be it. I haven't gotten my period early again since it happened, and also since some of my personal problems have been resolved. I noticed that someone else had suggested it might be that the levels of progestin aren't high enough, so i asked about that too. the nurse said that that particular issue is primarily a concern with the pill. according to her, this is more of a concern with the pill and not ortho evra because with the pill the medicine has to go through your stomach, liver, kidneys, and finally into your bloodstream. With ortho evra it goes directly through your skin into your bloodstream, so vomiting, diarrhea, or other stomach problems won't affect it. I also asked the nurse about the rumor circulating that the patch is less effective when placed on the abdomen. She immediatly told me she's never seen literature supporting that, and hopefully she's right, because that's where i put mine.

Finally I asked the nurse if she thought the ortho evra was still working even though i got my period early. She said of course she couldn't give me a full guarantee since there's always that 1% chance, but she had no reason to believe that it wasn't working, and if I wanted to be 100% sure I could always use a backup method. So another ambiguous answer, but at least I feel slightly more informed on the issue. She told me to just keep practicing the 3-week on, 1-week off cycle even if my period comes early. So I'm going to give ortho evra another chance and hopefully it will work out. I hope this info helps some of the other people with the same problem.

» befferson - Nausea, breast tenderness, etc.

I too am psyched that there is a discussion board available about this topic. I have also been experiencing the nausea, cramps and other stomach ailments others have talked about when I'm not on my period. My BIGGEST complaint however has been that my breasts stay sore since I've been on the patch. They are sometimes so painful I can't even touch them. Not sure I can deal with this side effect. Not to mention the patch hasn't lessened the length or severity of my periods although I've only been on it two months. My husband, who is the nicest guy on the planet and never says a harsh word, also thinks the patch is not very attractive. I do like the convenience, but with the side effects and the possibilty of pregnancy I've seen here...I think it's back to the pill for me.
