» SkiGirl - Skin irritation on patch

Have been using the patch for over five months. Not to be graphic, but my butt now looks like a checkerboard! Each time I use the patch (in a different spot each time, as instructed), it leaves a red square in its shape. Prefer to use it in this location because I don't want it to be seen while swimming, working out, etc., and especially don't want red squares all over!!! Any ideas for how to prevent this and get rid of the squares?

In response to message posted by SkiGirl:

It sounds like you could be allergic to the adhesive of the patch. I would suggest that you call your doctor and discuss switching to a different birth control method.

The only thing you might want to try before switching to a different method is maybe cleaning the area where the patch was with a mild soap or rubbing alcohol which would help to remove any adhesive still on the skin. If this does not work, then switching methods would be your best option.

i appreciate everyone's frank responses.

In response to message posted by scared_angel:

If you have your period, even early, you are not pregnant.

Now, when you say that you started your period 1 week early, do you mean that it arrived 7 days earlier than it normally does? Or do you mean that you started spotting?

There are a few reasons why your period would arrive early:
1. The patch fell off or lifted off and you did not notice it.
2. You have altered the patch in some way (cutting it, decorating it, etc) that is keeping it from delivering the hormones through the skin.
3. Your schedule is off for one reason or another, and the patches were applied later than they should have been.
4. You weigh more than 198 pounds and the patch is not working for you.
5. The hormone levels in the patch are not 'high' enough for you.

I would suggest that you see your health care provider about how well the patch is or is not working for you. I have no way of telling what could have caused your period to start so early, but if you have an idea of what may have caused it, and want a second opinion, please post it here.

In response to message posted by rednye:

On the Ortho Evra web site, there is an FAQ. In the FAQ, this has been answered as follows:

"For less than 24 hours: You should try to reapply it or apply a new birth control patch immediately. No back-up contraception is needed and your "Patch Change Day" will remain the same. You can reapply the patch by following these instructions:

  • Do not try to reapply a birth control patch if it's no longer sticky, if it has been stuck to itself or another surface, if it has other material stuck to it or if it has become loose or has fallen off before.
  • Press down firmly on the patch with the palm of your hand for 10 seconds, making sure that the edges stick well.
  • Then run your fingers around the edge of the patch.
  • Do not use tapes or wraps to keep the birth control patch in place.
  • If the birth control patch does not stick well, remove it and then apply a replacement birth control patch. This patch should be replaced on the original "Patch-Change Day". Single replacement patches are available through your pharmacist.

For more than 24 hours, or if you are not sure for how long: You may become pregnant. Start a new four week cycle immediately by applying new patch. You now have a new Day 1 and a new "Patch Change Day". You must use back-up birth control, such as a condom, spermicide or diaphragm for the first week of your new cycle."

So as you can see, the consequences depend on how long the patch has been off your skin. If it has been off for less than 24 hours, there is little to worry about except possibly spotting. If the patch has been off for longer than 24 hours, then you need to use a back up method for a week, and start your 'month' all over again.

I do hope that this answers your questions. You can read the list of FAQs at http://birthcontrol.orthoevra.com/faqs/f... incase you have other questions that might be answered there. If you can't find an answer there, please post your question here and I will find the answer for you.

» JBmom88 - Not sure if this is right...

I'm just starting the patch and with summer coming I needed a place that wouldn't be seen. Let me try to explain this

I put the patch on my back in the spot that would be equal to where my breasts are. Is that area OK? The tiny diagram that came with the pack seemed to cover that area. Hopefully this is OK... Thanks for any info!

» TSK4137 - Thank You

I started the patch today, based primarily on the original Ortho Evra thread in this community. I spent the majority of yesterday reading (start-to-finish) every single post that has been made, as well as the responses. I just wanted to say thank you to everyone because reading everything here really made me aware of ALL the possibilities going on the patch could have on my life, body, moods, etc. After reading everything, I still felt confident enough to apply the first patch today, so wish me luck!

I had been on triphasic BCPs for the past 8 years(Triphasil and Ortho-TriCylen) and had never had a problem remembering or anything but my boyfriend moved in last week so I wanted to try a method that required less "thinking" for the just-in-case factor. I applied it to my pelvis (very close to the hip bone) and am hoping all goes well.

My main concern is the "using the patch and drinking alcohol" issue I've read several people have had. My physician had no idea, had never heard that and was concerned that there had been no clinical trials on the matter. My pharmacy did not include a "do not consume alcoholic beverages while on this medication" sticker, so I'm not sure what's going to happen. I am a social drinker (2-3 drinks per week) and would be ok if I couldn't drink but am not ok with the idea of having a drink and spending the night throwing up in the restaurant bathroom.

Please provide any and all alcohol-related information you may have come across.

Thanks.

» deven11 - Re: Thank You

I, like you, recently started the patch. I finally found this website and have read all of the postings. The most helpful one is the one regarding the "spotting." I"ve been spotting for a week now...brown....nasty....and I've been kinda scared. I feel better knowing that it is common.

I haven't heard anything about drinking on it and I haven't had any issues yet....knock on wood.

So, good luck with it. I'll continue to read these postings and see how you are doing on it. I hope this spotting goes away....
