Animal Cruelty Case We NEED your letters 5-13-99 There has been a case of an alleged pet parrot killing of one of Madison Wisconsin's college students by another fraternity member. This bird (a quaker parrot) was locked in the owners private room which was entered without permission and the bird was removed from his cage and killed in the microwave oven. This is a horrific kind of death and this case is being followed by many bird and animal lovers in the hope that this crime does not go unpunished. Animal torture and abuse often leads to the same actions towards humans and must not be tolerated. This kind of action is not taken by a rational person even in the heat of anger. Society as a whole deserves to be protected from this individual and he should be required to receive counseling as part of his sentence.
This incident was reported in The Capital Times Weekender, CBS sports-line, Detroit News, The Milwaukee Journal Sentinal, The Associated Press and a Minnesota News Agency among others. Chad Alvarez, 23, son of UW football coach Barry Alvarez has been charged with felony mistreatment of an animal resulting in death which is a class E felony #99CF1010 which carries a fine of up to 10,000 and/or two years in jail. Alvarez turned himself in to the Madison Police Dept. on Friday afternoon and was released on a $500 signature bond. Preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 1st at 8:30am. The Dane County District Attorney needs your written letters to take into court. A large outpouring of support will illustrate to the judge that this is indeed a serious offense. Mr. Alvarez confessed and turned himself in. This should not excuse what he has done. He was accompanied today by a group of football players and they were giving him the nod and slapping each other on the back. There was no remorse to be seen. We are all outraged by this act and to let it go unpunished will send the message that this kind of vicious crime is acceptable. Here is your chance to let your feelings be known. Your letters will make a difference. Enough shared voices cannot be ignored. PLEASE send (before June 1st) your POLITELY worded comments, supporting documents and pictures to the following addresses; Diane Nicks Dane County District Attorney Room 523 210 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd Madison, WI 53709 Phone 608-266-4211 Fax 608-267-2545 Judge William Foust Dane County Room 207 210 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd Madison, WI 53709 Phone 608-266-4200 Fax 608-267-4153 Emails are NOT getting through due to heavy volume.
