I find it surprising you got the "I don't know" answers from people that should know. Did you ask librarians and/or literature experts?

In today's world one can hardly keep up with dictionary words, much less whether something's a classic or not. Since I totally hate what's being done to the English language (a word is a word is a word just because it's accepted and widely used) - who knows what the definition will be in the future about what's a classic!

Like this! Certainly would be worth looking into more.

The "experts" I consulted were numerous librarians, the chair of our local university's English department, a high school English/Lit' teacher, several bibliophiles like myself, and quite a few books whose definitions were vague, at best.
