» biogardener - Not just one and not even just two Not only does Canada have desert which your article describes and the Carberry Sandhills in Manitoba, it also has the SW Saskatchewan. This desert environment continues west to about Lethbridge, Alberta. Unlike in the Okanagan, that area does not have the water resources for irrigation. Instead, the farmers there practice what is called "dry farming." That means that the water is saved up in reservoirs to yield a crop maybe once in two or three years. You will also find a lot of ranching there.I taught in the are, and my students used to bring me little cactus which they picked in their fields so I could grow them inside. And that isn't all. I have a real surprise for you, Maureen. Most of Canada is desert. Look up the term "desert" in the dictionary and you will find the following three items: A barren or desolate area, especially:
b. A region of permanent cold that is largely or entirely devoid of life c. An apparently lifeless area of water -- posted by biogardener
