» Red - beautiful British Columbia...

Maureen,

I found this article both interesting and informative. Not many people know that Canada has a desert. I always enjoy reading about British Columbia. It is my favorite place to visit in the entire country. Thanks for another great article.

In response to message posted by paymb26:

Paym, most likely when you were driving through, you either took the Trans Canada Highway, which goes north of the Okanagan or you may have headed south through Penticton on Hwy 97. Just outside of Penticton, there is a junction of Hwy 97 and Hwy 3. To head to Vancouver, you would have followed the directional signs and turned at Highway 3. To go to Osoyoos, you would have continued on Hwy 97. Mind you, at Osoyoos, you would have met up with Hwy 3 again.

Most people enter Hwy 3 near Penticton because they see no need to go down south to Osoyoos and head back up north again.

Next time, Paym. smile

» Sunbear - Canadian desert, etc

Hi Maureen,

Enjoyed finding out more about BC and the desert.

I have always wanted to live in a desert for a while. The wide open spaces mirror offer symbolically a sense of an uncluttered mind.

The fact that there is so much life in a place where life should not exist by temperate zone standards, fascinates me also.

I always enjoy learning more about Canada and hope to visit there in the future (have vistited a few times from Oregon where I live).

Best wishes,
Tom

» WildCityWoman57 - Amazing!

I never knew that - thanks for posting this article. Very informative.

That beach is looking nice right now that we're into the heat wave in Toronto!

I'm visiting B. C. in September. Will most likely be starting in Ashcroft where my daughter lives.

» WildCityWoman57 - Since I last commented

I have recently returned from British Columbia. While there, I stayed at a farm for a weekend up in the mountains.

It is in the Venables Valley - near Ashcroft.

Actually, the farm is one of 15 lots on a Hare Krsna settlement.

I have a few pictures of it showing the sage covered mountains. That too, is desert.

I'm presently doing a travel journal on my column here - hope you'll click in to see it. I have not come to that part of the journal yet.

Canada has 2 deserts. There is a desert in Southern Manitoba near Carberry. Check this link.

Not only does Canada have desert which your article describes and the Carberry Sandhills in Manitoba, it also has the SW Saskatchewan. This desert environment continues west to about Lethbridge, Alberta. Unlike in the Okanagan, that area does not have the water resources for irrigation. Instead, the farmers there practice what is called "dry farming." That means that the water is saved up in reservoirs to yield a crop maybe once in two or three years. You will also find a lot of ranching there.

I taught in the are, and my students used to bring me little cactus which they picked in their fields so I could grow them inside.

And that isn't all. I have a real surprise for you, Maureen. Most of Canada is desert. Look up the term "desert" in the dictionary and you will find the following three items:

A barren or desolate area, especially:

    a. A dry, often sandy region of little rainfall, extreme temperatures, and sparse vegetation
    b. A region of permanent cold that is largely or entirely devoid of life
    c. An apparently lifeless area of water

Just enjoyed reading this article, Maureen, and wanted to tell you that Maine also has a little known desert. It's called the Desert of Maine of course. LOL

It's a very odd phenomenon for sure.

In response to Veesuite

To all who found it so incredibly interesting that Canada has a desert: Canada has at least two deserts.

The Carberry Desert in Manitoba is also known as the Spirit Sands. It used to cover 6, 000 square kilometers, but is now less than 25 square kilometers.

The area is eerie. We went from parking our car and leaving a pleasantly warm summer's day to entering an area of sand dunes where the temperature had gone up several degrees.

There's also an insect that lives there which makes the most annoying and loud sound you've ever heard. It's akin to hydro wires singing in the winter.

Anyway, B.C. isn't the only place to find a desert and I'm not going to say that it and Manitoba's desert are the only ones in our vast country.
