Of the many articles that I have read on Steve, I think your's rates among the very best. And of course I am prejudiced since I am an out and out Steve fan. I remember that match in Bangalore that you mention about, where Steve ran up to Taylor, "literally begging him to give him the ball" as you put it. I was watching the incident in the stadium, and remember uttering a muted curse when Taylor chose to ignore Steve.

Though an Indian, I wish Steve had conquered "The final frontier" to quote his own words. While you attribute that to fate,a.k.a Harbhajan Singh, I would add a couple of more names to the list, the foremost among them being Umpire Bansal! Steve now joins the list of the elite people who achieved almost everything, but some feat always eluded them. Sir Don's missing out on the magical 100 average, AB's dream of conquering the West Indies to name a few.

Watching the videos of Steve's visits to Udayan, I was almost startled by the look in his eyes, when a little girl put her hands around his neck. Never have I seen a more softened, gentle, loving, serene look in his often expressionless face( as my sister puts it). The fact that a lot of the Australian cricket team has followed his lead and are sponsoring a child there, speaks volumes for Steve.

My meeting with Steve this time, though short, left as big an impression on me as the one in 98. I was left wondering at what makes this man tick, what force drives him on - he was cool and collected even in defeat, what an excellent cricketer and human being he is. A true ambassador of the sport, respecting its time honoured traditions (unlike Ganguly), a legend, an icon by himself, one whom almost everyone love to adore.
