If I remember correctly, Buck Newsom pitched both ends of a double header throwing right handed in one game and left handed in the other. However, it MIGHT have been in the minors at the time pitching for the Los Angeles Angels.

Is that accomplishment in the record book?

Did any other pitcher equal that accomplishment?

That is a great question. I certainly do not know. I will try to find out, but I DO know that Clint Hartung, who played for the New York Giants, pitched with both hands.

I think he was facing a switch hitter and the hitter kept changing sides of the plate, depending on which hand Hartung kept his glove on.

Finally, Hartung put his glove on the side of the mound, got set on the mound, and put both hands around the ball.

It also seems the single season strikeout record is also one batters want to avoid--even though many on the list who once held the record are now in the Hall of Fame.

Another way to look at it is this. If the pitcher were truly that awful, or the batter that bad, they would not be pitching in enough games to get that many losses or the at-bats to get those strikeouts. Jose Valentin was with the Brewers a few years ago and was threatening that record (he sat out the last two weeks of the season and avoided it). But he was able to also have a half-way decent average, put the ball into play, and was a great fielder. He was also in the All-Star Game that year.

Agree completely but in the playoffs and World Series or even in critical regular season games, a strikeout is a complete waste (except with two outs, when any out is bad and a missed third strike allows all runners to try to advance).

If contact is made, a player can get lucky.
