Bluebirds in, Chickadees out!Read the article this discussion is about

Thanks for the wonderful and informative early summer article. It has been ages since we've had bluebird boxes...maybe I should get myself to the Farmers' Supply tomorrow and see what they have for sale. In a "previous life," that of a Scout mother, my son's den made bluebird boxes. A carpenter friend cut out all the pieces. All the boys had to do was nail them together and then decide where to post them. It was a very successful project. Some of the "big box" stores sponsor birdhouse building sessions for youngsters. You need to access their websites and then a local store to find out what is happening when. Having just returned from Roanoke, VA, I know you are several weeks - sometimes one month - ahead of us here in N.E. I haven't noticed any baby chick-a-dees, so I probably still have time for the bluebird boxes. -- posted by Georgene A. Bramlage » humorous_sage - Geography Do bluebirds spend time in Minnesota? If you want to put up some boxes (and I think it's great if the kids build them) put them somewhere cats and snakes can't get them, preferably with some sun and shelter nearby. Now our baby nuthatches have discovered the deck and are trying to peck at it like a tree to get some food! -- posted by Schipperke » Schipperke - Re: Geography In response to Geography posted by humorous_sage:They can be a summer bird in your area but not as plentiful as here in VA. These birds won't be in city areas, and not in areas with a lot of starlings and house sparrows. You may have to take a trip south to see them! -- posted by Schipperke » humorous_sage - Re: Re: Geography In response to Re: Geography posted by Schipperke:Sad news. I think I'd prefer bluebirds over all the starlings and blackbirds we have in our area. They are real hogs and empty the feeder in less than two days. Hank -- posted by humorous_sage
