» humorous_sage - Dedicated You seem to be a dedicated bird watcher. Maybe you can tell me which birds like suet? We have a suet feeder on our padio but no suet eaters.Mr. Minnesota -- posted by humorous_sage

I guess it takes awhile for the birds to find it and spread the word. I've had mine for years and they stay swarmed most of the year. Right now we have some different kinds of birds visiting...migration time I guess. -- posted by Joy Butler » dlkompare - Bird Observations I also have several types of feeders available at our home. It surprised me that we did not see many birds during the winter. Of course, I don't think we had a bad winter this year. Just yesterday, I watched about three dozen robins eating crabapples in our yard. If we went out to get into the car, they flocked into the nearby trees until we left, or were "safely" into the car. It was fun to watch them. Here we thought the crabapple trees would be a nuisance, but they have proven several times they really attract the local birds and wildlife (squirrels, etc.)Debbie Kompare -- posted by dlkompare » feistyfemale56 - Great article, great descriptions of your observations--I could visualize the birds as if I were there. Well done.I am brand new to the bird watching world, and am now in the northwest corner of the country as opposed to the Great Lakes area, so lots to learn and explore. This winter, I did the pine cones dipped in peanut butter and covered with seed, then put them out with thread in the large bushes. Additionally, put out slices of apple and oranges in the same manner. The fruit still hangs where I placed it, withered and sad looking, but the pine cones have disappeared--the whole things! My guess is the "tuxedo birds" (magpies) or the squirrels scavenged them off...not what I had hoped for, but wildlife all the same. -- posted by feistyfemale56 » Schipperke - Re: Dedicated In response to Dedicated posted by humorous_sage:Suet is eaten by birds who usually eat insects like woodpeckers, nuthatches, chickadees, titmice, kinglets. But I have seen other birds like cardinals, and bluejays eat it in the winter when they seem to need more body fat. Give it time and the birds will come! -- posted by Schipperke » Schipperke - Re: I put out a bird feeder In response to I put out a bird feeder posted by jerrib:Jerri: Where did you put your feeder, and what kinds of birds have you seen around your house? Sometimes it takes awhile for the birds to find the food. All it takes, usually, is for one group of birds to flock to a feeder and the others will follow in curiousity. Give it time. -- posted by Schipperke » Schipperke - Re: Bird Observations In response to Bird Observations posted by dlkompare:All kinds of birds will eat your crabapples, along with deer, raccoons, skunks, bears (if you have them nearby like I do)... -- posted by Schipperke » Schipperke - Re: Great article, great In response to Great article, great posted by feistyfemale56:Squirrels or raccoons could have taken them... The birds that like fruit are often very shy so give it time. I have only seen pictures of tuxedo birds..they seem to be kind of like our crows or bluejays..bossy little fellows! -- posted by Schipperke » humorous_sage - Re: Re: Dedicated In response to Re: Dedicated posted by Schipperke:Thanks for the encouragement, Mary. I guess I'm just a little impatient. Hank -- posted by humorous_sage
