Weren't you in the least worried about the cat sneaking up on YOU?

Does the smell of a human linger long enough after you've camped to alter the animals' comfort with this boulder or patch of ground near the stream? What about the dog, whose scent might linger as well? Or don't the animals seem to be affected?

I am sure the lion knew we were there about as soon as we arrived. Very few people go up in that country (off trail), and so I don't think it would alter the lion's behavior for very long.

I definitely keep my dog's close while up there. I heard a Colorado Division of Wildlife Officer describe a camper who slept in the tent while his German Shepard slept outside. A lion came and killed the dog and carried it off. Lions are able to kill mature elk (1000 pounds) and horses. I have read of an instance where a lion jumped a fence while carrying a pony that it killed.

I have lived in lion country for so long that I just accept the danger as part of the scenery, and realize the chance of them attacking is very, very remote. I don't yet have the same comfort level while backpacking in Grizzly country, because I don't go up there as often.
