» Red - interesting...

Kristen,

A very interesting article. There are many names that were popular years ago that people do not use anymore. I had an Aunt Mildred and my first husband's grandmother's name was Blanche. I do know an Elmer, a Ruby, a Bertha, a Floyd and an Ethel. However, most of these people are in mid life and beyond. I don't know anyone younger that has these names. You may be right. They may be gone forever, or they may make a comeback some day.

I found your point that women's name tend to disappear more often than male's. I wonder why?

Thanks for another interesting read.

I am guessing it has to do with the fact that boys are often named after their forebears. It keeps male names going. It also means there are fewer male names to choose from (though still quite a lot!).

It's funny, but most people I have talked to seem to have an easier time finding names for one gender or the other. For me, it's boy names...my husband and I can easily find boy names we love, but girl names are a greater challenge. For most people I know though, girl names are easier, because of the greater variety and styles.

Kristen,

When I was expecting my daughter (only child) my first husband (who passed away when she was young) and I were positive we were going to have a boy. Surprise!!! We had a boys name picked out and yes, it was after his father. When we had a girl, it took us two weeks to decide on her name. It was difficult, but finally came up with Canadace Michelle. Candace was for my grandmother. Michelle was a new name for the family. Now we have 2 Michelle's.

» amooska - old fashioned names

When I was a high school senior in '84, my dad would tease me that my friends all had "old" names: there was an Edith, an Ernie and a Leonard.

My mother is finally reconciling herself to the fact that old-fashioned names are in. Most of the boy names my husband and I like remind her of old men in her family. smile The family was very glad when we decided against Benjamin as a first name and used it as a middle name, as it sounded like a very unattractive old man name to them.
