» kateack - garden pests (birds) Does any body have a good method of ridding the backgarden from birds. The birds are getting into the garden and scratching out all the mulch. I have tried "Scat" and other commercial preparations, but they keep coming back. The are actually starting to dig up seedling and small plants and "kicking" the bark chips all over the drive way and paths!HELP!!! -- posted by kateack » Kirk_Johnson - Re: garden pests (birds) In response to message posted by kateack:A cat might do the job. Or maybe a pet hawk. -- posted by Kirk_Johnson » ziggystuff - Re: garden pests (birds) In response to message posted by kateack:Do you have any solution to avids growing on my 'Orange tree' any cure would be appeciated {I have been spraying liquid deteregent on them} -- posted by ziggystuff » Marcia56 - Re: garden pests (birds) In response to message posted by kateack:If it was me I'd try putting a few wind chimes in the area, the noise just may scare them off. The ringing of the chimes, if big, should do the trick. A cat will only cause you more problems. A dog would 100% get rid of the all. -- posted by Marcia56 » biogardener - Better still Better still than what Kirk suggests, get a Siamese cat, and I know that Kirk would agree with me because he has one.I don't mind most birds. It is the ground-feeding birds which are pests, and they are not even native North American but where introduced here from Britain to eat mosquitoes. Unfortunately, they not only don't eat mosquitoes but they eat the baby birds who would otherwise grow up to eat mosquitoes. The worst of them are starlings. Starlings are afraid of cats because cats creep up on them. They are probably more respectful of Siamese cats than any other because Siamese with their long hind legs are faster on the ground than other cats. Dusty, the cat who has helped me write some of my most popular articles at Suite101, was part Siamese even though she did not look like it. The starlings sure knew it, though, because they never came anywhere near our property when Dusty was around. Our previous cat, Simi, did look Siamese, and the first time she showed her face outdoors, the starlings took flight and they did not return until two years after Simi's death, i.e. when the generation who had seen her had died out. So get a Siamese cat. The cat does not even have to chase the birds. All she has to do is show her face. -- posted by biogardener
