New Aussie needs help!!!
This archived discussion is "read only".
» FibroWarrior - a million questions! John;I recently (late october) moved from Canada to Victoria Australia and the gardens here are simply amazing!! The little knowledge I do have about gardening...like planting crocus bulbs in September to see their little purple heads poking thru the snow in late march...LOL...don't think that's gonna help me here!! My primary interest is in herbs and bulbs. What I really could use is a book recommendation? I've been to the local bookshop and frankly I wouldn't know a good book on australian gardening if it jumped off the shelf and hit me!! So any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks -- posted by FibroWarrior » Postmum - Re: a million questions! In response to message posted by FibroWarrior:I cannot answer your question about a good gardening book but if you would go to your local library I am sure you can get help. If you were only in Sydney I would have referred you to DYMOCK'S BOOK STORE, but maybe you have something similar in Victoria. It can be very confusing when you go to live in a country where the seasons are in reverse months. Hope this will help you. -- posted by Postmum » Gay_Klok - Re: a million questions! In response to message posted by FibroWarrior:There used to be only one Australian gardening book of any use - many years ago! This Was "Brunnings" We now have books written by Oz experts that are read world wide. Macoboys for roses and shrubs, and his excellent Camellia book. But if you only have one book [to cover all gardening], I would not be without "Botanica", the illustrated A_Z of over 10,000 garden plants, Random House. This is a very large book [there is a CD Rom that comes with it] which has consultants from New Zealand, Tony Rodd, Australian, the UK, USA, and it is very rare not to be able to find a plant there For a specialist book on Australian bulbs, why not go to The Suites expert gardener who is Australian and has many very knowledgable members - "Alpines and Bulbs" - click "gardening", go to recent discussions on the right and you are sure to find a discussion at Gary's page, it is very lively! -- posted by Gay_Klok
