Multiculturalism -- Fact or Fiction
This archived discussion is "read only".
» joatsimeon - Australian Assimilation Actually, Australia is not becoming "multicultural", public pieties to the contrary.Every survey indicates that the children of the post-1945 immigration are adopting English as their primary home language, and the majority are marrying outside "their" community. Well over half of second-generation Chinese marry whites, for example. Multiculturalism isn't a condition, it's a transitional stage. That means that the goal of the 1950's -- assimilation -- is being achieved. And very rapidly; in the US, it has traditionally taken much longer. Australia is not becoming multicultural; it's becoming more unified. Assimiliation is, of course, a two-way process. -- posted by joatsimeon
