» humorous_sage - Great Review

This is an excellent review, Rodolfo. Every time you submit an article, I get a good education. Thanks.

Thanks Hank, glad to learn you find this material interesting.

There is still a third part and probably a fourth one. I am tempted to cast some speculative lines over the fascinating subject of life, that is, an attempt to describe unique features we may associate with it and correspondingly the way it may show up besides what we intuitively understand as life.

You bring up good questions. "What is life?" and "What is life all about." We might speculate and hypothesize but I don't expect to get any solid answers during my short stay on earth.

Will we know a lot more once we pass on? Who knows? I sure don't. I'm looking forward to seeing your approach to those questions.

Hank

Yes, solid answers probably will not come about shortly, but incremental steps instead. To peek the issues I will try to address in the last part, we knew for centuries about hereditary traits. Just about 50 years back, Watson and Creek becama famous for discovering the ADN structure and how it relates to transmission of genetic information. Last days I got the news Nature was making publicly available the full sequence of cromosome X. Yet we are still quite far from making full sense of this as related to preciselly and completely understand and map from each bit of genetic information, what it determines. As said, they are incremental steps and I guess the process will still take several further levels of abstraction and decoding. And then there is the issue of what makes an individual become so, that is, the complement of post-birth aquired information particularly in the nervous system. Here is another realm where progress has been carried on incrementally and will most probably go on in the same manner climbing successive levels of abstraction.

We know so much and yet we know so little. Even my doctor tells me that he is only rolling the dice and then guessing about what the outcomes really mean.

» Tina_Coruth - Another excellent article.

Another excellent article. I am really enjoying this series.

Who knows what other unlikely thing, perhaps even life, may have occurred within the same planetary system just as the unlikely occurrence of two planets with relatively large moons?

I enjoyed your links, especially the link to the earth's core.

I'll be back to read part III.

Curiously, hopes at least in the Solar System are centered on large satellites like Europe or Titan, that also feature long term climatic stability and a liquid medium.

Yes, I find it interesting that we on planet earth find that our best hopes of finding life is on other planet's moons!

I'm betting on the planets instead of the moons as the first source of extraterrestrial life we discover. However, I doubt if either of us live long enough to find out who is right.
