» phillipkeen - Prader-Willi Syndrome

Hello, My name is Phillip Keen. I have Prader-Willi Syndrome which is a birth defect/genetic disorder. Prader-Willi Syndrome has similar characteristics to Autism and Aspergers Syndrome. Many people who have Prader-Willi Syndrome also suffer with acute asthma problems. They also typically have an extremely poor respiratory system.

Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS) is a complex genetic disorder that typically causes low muscle tone, short stature, incomplete sexual development, cognitive disabilities, problem behaviors, and a chronic feeling of hunger that can lead to excessive eating and life-threatening obesity. Most cases of PWS are attributed to a spontaneous genetic error that occurs at or near the time of conception for unknown reasons. In a very small percentage of cases (2 percent or less), a genetic mutation that does not affect the parent is passed on to the child, and in these families more than one child may be affected. A PWS-like disorder can also be acquired after birth if the hypothalamus portion of the brain is damaged through injury or surgery. It is estimated that one in 12,000 to 15,000 people has PWS. Although considered a "rare" disorder, Prader-Willi Syndrome is one of the most common conditions seen in genetics clinics and is the most common genetic cause of obesity that has been identified. PWS is found in people of both sexes and all races. I desire to help bring Prader-Willi Syndrome out of the dark closet. On Saturday evening October 28th, 2000 I applied to become a Suite101 Editor to have a topic on Prader-Willi Syndrome. You will be able to find out more about it then. You can find out more information about myself by clicking on my name above and seeing my profile.

I dearly want to be a Suite101 Editor, and the national Prader-Willi Syndrome Association dearly wants me to become an editor too. My good friend, Desra Dawn Morningstar highly recommenended that I start posting messages similar to this one in the various discussions areas so I could start building up my readership.

I need to go now. See you later; take care, and God Bless.
