» bensmom89 - parenting a child with aspergers

It has been so wonderful to read your articles. I truly feel that some one else understands and knows how I feel.My son who just turned 12 was diagnosed the 30th of April.I feel like his whole life makes sense now. I understand so many things. I still don't know how to handle him, but at least I understand. The Psychologist told me he was like two full time jobs.We are on the waiting list for services at Teacch in Wilmington, N.C.

Hi bensmom:

For years I thought I was the only one in the world with a child like mine and when we got the diagnosis of Asperger Syndrome, I finally made sense out of his behaviour too. Once I made the mental connections as to why he does some of the things he does I get along with him much better now and I can explain his difficulties much easier to the teachers.

Well, you can take some solace in the fact that as adults, we can take the associated strenghts and run with them.

I'm doing well in the computer field, despite having just been laid off. (I'll have another job soon, I have no fear)

Aspies do well as....

Scientists (all)
Musicians
Actors
Writers

and any other occupation where unconventional thought is an asset rather than a liability.

Good luck to all the parents of aspies. There is hope.
