Can ADD, or ADHD and Asperger's Syndrome Occur Together?Read the article this discussion is about
This archived discussion is "read only". « Previous 1 2 Next » » SSJOujiBejiita - Hai! Soo desu! ("Yes! That's right!") It definitely happens, AS and ADD/ADHD together, because I'm an example of a person who has them both. I'm having major trouble in school because of it. I have acid reflux, allergic reactions, severe depression, plus AS and ADD/ADHD. I take medicines for all four categories, (yes, FOUR)and despite the fact that I take my meds every day, I still get very depressed at times (mainly when I come home). Is this just part of having all of these things together? (By the way, I'm not Japanese, **ainiku**, I just love Japan and Japanese Animation. Hey, I'm only 15! It's still okay to do that! ^_^-- posted by SSJOujiBejiita » hotdolly71 - aspergers I just wanted to say that it is a proven fact you cant out grow aspergers, you can learn more social cues as you grow older, but you will always have aspergers if you have it, I mean i have it , and i act much diffent now then i did when i was little. I have learned more social cues and no on really can tell that i have it they just think im a little weird some times. I can tell when people do things that are not sociallly exceptable to , but that does not mean i recovered form aspergers. It just means i learned more socail cues-- posted by hotdolly71 » hotdolly71 - ADHD and aspergers I always thought ADHD was part of aspergers? I read that they could actually be the same disorder just in diffent degrees. I hard that asperger people have more troble concentrating then those with ADHD. I have all of the ADHD behaviors i think but i was only dignosed with aspergers-- posted by hotdolly71 » Drakesmom - Re: Re: ADD and Aspergers In response to message posted by Lokean:My son was originally diagnosed with ADHD at age 5. Now that he is 11, additional evaluation by the school psych. has unearthed a hint of AS. In your experience, is there a "defining characteristic" that distinguishes between the two? Also, since there is such a span of traits within AS, and within AD(h)D, for purposes of treatment does it really matter if you ever determine which one is the cause of the behaviors? Are the medications the same either way? Our psychiatrist says stimulants would be in order, regardless. We are going to see a neurologist for the first time next month. I just thought I might ask for your take on this, so I might know what to expect to hear. It looks like you've been through the gauntlet already! -- posted by Drakesmom » JoesMom66 - Re: Re: Re: ADD and Aspergers In response to message posted by kanddwolfe:Thank you so much! I'm very frustrated by the doctors telling me "He is unfolding" Joe is 7 yrs old and has had 5 different diagnosis's attached to him. I was thinking of hematology but genetics sounds like it would be more to the point. Thanks so much! God Bless. Mari -- posted by JoesMom66 » Neko_Baka - Re: Hai! Soo desu! ("Yes! That's right!") In response to I just wanted to support SSJOujiBejiita in that I also have both ADD/ADHD and Asperger's. It's just recently come to light, as that I've been overlooked for so long. I take about ten pills a day cause I also have allergies and anemia, and anxiety. It's something of a pain, but I prefer the pills to the alternative. It's interesting, I've noticed that I get obsessions that change, like one day I'd be obsessed with a certain anime show, or character, and then a week later I'll be obsessed with a comic book, and then a month later, with a novelists, and on and on. And yes, I also am a fan of anime, and I'm almost 18! (anime is just the style by which an animation is drawn, it has no relation to the genre. I know old grandmother's who are obsessed with anime) see you later ^^ posted by bSSJOujiBejiitaaa: -- posted by Neko_Baka » daru3 - Re: Re: Hai! Soo desu! ("Yes! That's right!") In response to message posted by Neko_Baka:I'm a 46 year old male from Staten Island, NY. I'm also an aspie complicated with ADHD and an ever present potential of chronic depression, and I can tell you, things don't improve that much with age. Thank goodness, with the help of drugs, I don't stim that much that often, but I still have limitations and can only work in a special shop that accepts people with mental conditions. The most infuriating thing about my life is that I'm on a Social security disability pension that gives me cash and Medicare, but limits how much I can earn on the job. Still, I gotta admit, there are a lot of people who would love to be in my position. -- posted by daru3 » Edda - Re: Outgrowing Aspergers This site on Asperger Syndrome is fascinating. I have never been given a formal diagnosis, but I think some of the traits apply to me. I have strong interests in many different things. (My current passion is Greece and Greek culture.) I also think that I have grown up a lot over time. I too used to research my favorite topics until I knew everything about them. This is a trait I retain to this day. However, I am much more relaxed than I was growing up and am lucky to have a job in a field I enjoy and that plays to my strengths. It is fascinating reading Barbara Fowler's articles on Asperger Syndrome and reading these threads. -- posted by Edda » Edda - Re: Hai! Soo desu! ("Yes! That's right!") I think it is definitely okay to be interested in what you are doing. In fact, I find it fascinating to be interested in learning another language. I spoke German until I was six, learned English well, and got straight A's in Spanish. Currently, I am interested in learning Greek. I was very interested in Japanese culture when I was in junior high. At any age, learning is fun!-- posted by Edda » tellaya - Re: Re: Hai! Soo desu! ("Yes! That's right!") The way I see it is like this for everything you get theres is always something you give up to get what it is that you want, and aspergers is kind of like that. For example I have aspergersand I also have a high level of nonverbal reasoning but i have a diminished level of mathematical skills. So what I did was I taught my self to developee" my mind to use my strength in place of my disadvantage for example (Yeah I know I repeated that) When I am figuring percentages for taxes or what not I think in terms of money like this(one dollar is equal to one hundred cents therefore a cent is one one hundredth so five cents or five percent would betwentyy one hundredths) etc... Most of the problems I have with it are social like I am scared to call people on the phone well actually in fact I am scared of the fact that Idontt have eye contact with the person on the other line (yeahthatss right I said eye contact) and well I like to keep eye contact with people while speaking with them it's out of habit I guess. I am going way off so I will just leave it at that. -- posted by tellaya « Previous 1 2 Next » Please follow the guidelines set forth in the Suite101 Posting Etiquette when adding to the discussion. |
