» jerrib - Such wonderful art

Your article brings Mattie to life. I love her colorful "country" paintings - would love to have some in my house! I spent time looking at them, but not as much as I'd like.

Thanks for stopping to read about Sunny Walter. She and Mattie have a lot in common - a career later in life (though Sunny was not quite as old as Mattie).

There's hope for anyone wanting to start an artistic vent in later life. It's never too late to start.

Thanks for the view and inspiration of this article.

» Jo Murphy - These paintings Are Soooo Beautiful

Wow these paintings are so beautiful. They remind me of some of the naive art from a small country town where I used to live. There are pineapple fields that stretch for miles and the painters can make the most beautiful decorative patterns from the shapes and geometric plantings.
Thanks for the article it was a great read.

Hi Jerri,

I agree it is never too late to start. My mother often encourages me to start painting again. She painted in high school and then started again when my sister and I moved out. She loves it, but regrets that she set it aside for all those years.

What I find so inspirational about Mattie is that she didn't need classes and master art teachers - it makes me think (hmmm) maybe I don't either.

Now I just need another three hours in the day....

Thanks for stopping in,

Hi Jo,

Do you know who any of the artists were whose paintings you describe? I would love to look them up.

You may find this funny but the first time I saw a pineapple plant I was 22 years old and it amazed me. I had no idea the pineapple grew right on top like that. I don't know what I expected, but I was so fascinated I took pictures of it. I can imagine how beautiful paintings could be of pineapple plantings.

I'm glad you enjoyed the article,

» vivavoce - Super Article

This is such a great article. You've demonstrated that one can, indeed, attain success at any age with a great formula:

hard work + conscientiousness + determination + observation of what's around you + attention to what people want to know.

Thanks for telling us about Mattie Lou.

No I have never seen the artists written up in books or on the web!
Hmmm! That's a good idea though.
It was good to read this article again,
