In response to message posted by Mountain_lady:Wow, Bertha, the message you posted in response to mine would make a great article all in itself! How fascinating to think that your in-laws, both of them, worked together to create a beautiful quilt from a fallen leaf. Thank you so much for telling me about that. hugs to you, too, my friend! By the way, I just got my much-delayed copy of Soul Menders and loved your story. Anne -- posted by AnneWatkins » Dubh_Sidhe - Lovely What beautiful samples you have shared with us, Bert. I guess you know I collect quilts. I have about 30. Right now, I have a log cabin design on my bed, and a wedding ring in one of the guest rooms. There is a very large Amish community not far from my home, and every year the ladies bring their fantastic quilts to our Fall festival. They are terribly expensive, and though I would love to have one, year after year passes, because of the cost. I have attempted to make them, but the measuring fouls me up. Enjoyed this great article, Bert. -- posted by Dubh_Sidhe » Red - quilts... Quilts are wonderful things. Not only do they keep you cozy and warm, but they give a sense of bonding with the person who made it.Grandma used to make quilts for every baby that was born. I am saddened to say that the one she made for Michelle was stolen. The blocks had little ducks and chickens all over them that she had hand embroidered. The background of the blocks were white but she had used yellow to put between them - a very pale yellow. It was beautiful and Grandma's stitches were so tiny and even. Mom makes quilts too. She has made Brandon and Jordan two each. The first she did was of trains, since they both love trains so much. The other was a rainforest scene with all of the animals looking out from the canopy. The rich colors make these quilts a treasure to behold. Mom is a great stitcher too. Mom and I have also made a few quilts together. She has a top made for each of her children and is working on tops for each of the grandchildren. All four of her great-grandchildren have one already. Thanks for sharing this great article with us. Quilting is a great past time, which reminds me. Right after Christmas Mom and I should start quilting some of those tops. Take care, Bert. I hope all is well with you and yours. -- posted by Red » Renie_Burghardt - Quilts Hi Bertha, what a wonderful article. Yes, not only do you see quilts airing on clothes lines, but you see signs of many of them for sale, throughout little rural communities. I have a neighbor that makes beautiful quilts, although she is now over 80. I have bought several from her for my children and grandchildren. That quilt that you mother made must be really special! I enjoyed the article and photos of all the lovely quilts. Thank you, Bertha. Hope all is well with you. Take care. Yes, Dad (inlaw) passed on several years ago but Mom (inlaw) kept on making those quilts. She is 86 now and has slowed down alot. Her fingers just won't hold the needle anymore. She really misses making them. I have several she has made and I cherish them so much. My boys have several too. We put their name and date and the occasion the quilt was made for on the back in a corner. That way whoever inherits the quilt will know some history about it. hugs... -- posted by Mountain_lady » Mountain_lady - Re: Lovely In response to message posted by Dubh_Sidhe:I must admit I've never made a quilt either. Started a few but never finished them...Robert's mother would eventually end up with them and remake them into what they were suppose to be. I do sew or use to sew quite a bit. Even sewed for people but just never did make a quilt. I love to crochet and I've made several quilt size afgans. -- posted by Mountain_lady » Mountain_lady - Re: quilts... In response to message posted by Red:Hi Mary, isn't it wonderful when our kids have something that they can remember grandma's by? A quilt can tell you so much about the person that made it. I love watching quilt shows. I use to watch one and the lady could tell you all about the quilter and the period it was made in just by looking at the stitching and the material. It was fascinating. I can sew or make just about anything I set my mind to but a quilt is the one thing I've never made. Maybe I should get busy and start one "again" and this time finish it....Glad you came by...I would love to see a picture of those quilts your mom made for the boys...hugs -- posted by Mountain_lady » Mountain_lady - Re: Quilts In response to message posted by Renie_Burghardt:Hi Renie, did you have frost on the ground this morning? It was cold enough for it here... -- posted by Mountain_lady » Red - Re: Re: quilts... In response to message posted by Mountain_lady:Bert, Remind me to put some in the mail for you. I have pictures of them but will get some better ones. Mom has made all 3 of us kids quilt tops and is now working on tops for all the granchildren. I will always cherish mine. It is priceless as far as I'm concerned. Mine is a fan quilt - one of my favorite patterns and Mom did it in greens and pinks. I will see if she will let me take a photo of it to send along to you as well. -- posted by Red » jerrib - Quilts are at the heart of America, Bertha. And you have some fine quilters in your state. I know; I've been there and seen them. The photos you supplied just fill me with warmth looking at them, in so many ways. Can you find a better way to show someone you care than a quilt? This is so heartwarming. I'll be back to look at these again. -- posted by jerrib « Previous 1 2 Next » Please follow the guidelines set forth in the Suite101 Posting Etiquette when adding to the discussion. |
