Hi Jerri, I've heard of the "mad stone" before but never checked out what it really was. It is interesting and I would like to learn more about it. I've been looking through the internet but so far there's not much out there about it. I was hoping that maybe someone out in cyber land would give us some more information about it. If I find out anymore I'll be sure and let all of you in on it. Thanks for coming by....Hugs

Hi Tina, I was lucky to run across a reference to the mad stone. I had heard about it most of my life. I think my grandpa told a story about a mad stone that was used on someone. Anyway, I began some searching and wrote the article about it. Now I won't be satisfied till I see a picture. When I do obtain one I will share it with all of you. Thanks for coming by...hugs

Great story, Bertha, and so well written! I wish my grandmothers were still living. I bet they would know something about this.

Hope it's nice in your part of the country. Are you getting storms?

Anne

Hi Anne, thanks for coming by. Yeap, your grandmothers might would know something. I wish my grandpa was alive, I bet he could tell me all there is to know. We got a good rain yesterday along with a storm. I didn't mind the wind and hard rain but I hate the lightening. It sure did some popping around here. It's been clear and humid today but not quite as hot. Anyone working outside might disagree with me on that. Take care...hugs

Hi Bertha, totally fascinating article. I have never heard of the Mad Stone either. Will have to ask around, and see if any oldsters (older than me, that is!) around here have heard of it. I did have an albino deer for a while. She was beautiful. But I haven't seen her since last fall. I enjoyed the article, and will check out the links. Looking forward to seeing a picture of that stone. Hope someone has one. Take care. Renie

Hi Renie, I am just as anxious to see a picture of the stone too. Hopefully someone out there will know something we don't know and will share with us. How are you doing? It's cooled down alot since the rains came. I've got a feeling we are going to have an early fall. Have you noticed any signs in the woods? Around here the squirrels are really busy and some of the trees are shedding their leaves. Might all be due to the hot weather or the front that just came through but seems I feel it in my bones. Take care...hugs

My father told me that my grandmother had a mad stone. And that it came from the skull of an albino whitetail deer. And That the Indians used it to remove venom from snake bites. The stone was strapped to the bite and it quivered and turned green. It was then removed, soaked in milk and saved for the next time.Dad said she donated it to a Museum in Houston or Dallas.don't remember witch.

I first heard about a madstone from a lady who is 91 years old. She was bitten by a rabid dog when she was a child. She was taken to a hospital in St Louis where she was treated with a madstone. Her description sounds like what I just read about on this site. It is very interesting. The dogs head was analyzed and rabies was confirmed. It was used in hospitals. She said it was a large hospital for the times.

I have one it is my Mothers(91)before that my grandmothers. The story is one of my uncles brought it back from Germany after the war. I don't know about the rabies but I do know Mother has said one of the cousins in the 1890's was bite by a snake and the stone was soaked in hot salt water and but on the bit. When the stone turned green it was removed and put back in the salt water and it would draw the poison out into the water and this process would continue as long as necessary. The cousin didn't even get sick.
