Hi JaredI have no palm in my garden, else I would write about it for you here. I am, however, very surprised that no one else here seems to have a palm in their garden, or no time to respond to your answer. Because I feel this has been overlooked I am bringing this discussion to the top again so that people will have one more chance to see this.
There are a few palms that grow well around here. I think of them as Mediterranean Fan Palms and Windmill Palms. On the islands here they need no winter protection. Because of their relative recent status as garden plants in this locality, they are normally seen in modern-style gardens or as formal sentry type peices in mediterranean style gardens.
As far as how else they are used, I am wondering if perhaps you were cuing us all for how we use them, as in wrapping sticky rice in their leaves or some other 'use' of 'economic importance'. If this is the case, I know of no 'use' for these palms in the PNW and Coastal B.C., other than pure ornament.
I suppose you could also say they have the use of using up alot of extra money at purchasing time.

If that is USDA zone 9 there jojo then you can grow a few more species in your climate. I do not know the WGB zones, have to look them up.I was just probing to see which species everyone is growing. But if you have a "use" too, well I am all ears for that too.

Hello PlantboyI suppose the biggest use for palms worldwode would be coconuts, but if you've just got leaves there's always roofing a palapa.
There was a recent discussion here on suite101 about starting Sago Pups. Now I can't find it. There are sure to be (at least one) palm enthusiasts there.

There are literally hundreds of different kinds of palms that will grow here in Phoenix; however, obtaining them is quite a problem. As Phoenix does not have an exotic palm nursery - California or Florida are our next possibilities. Then comes the problem of getting large enough ones without costing an arm and a leg to have shipped here - plus the problem of palms shipped in from Florida (they don't want to ship to Arizona due to out current threat of fire ants and the brown citrus aphid.-- posted by Mrs_Beasley

Actually palm in a pot in my garden..The house I live in came with three Queen Palms already in ground. They aren't happy out here in the windy eastern part of Tucson. I've already taken one out. Should I take out the other two?
I love palms but until recently had no place for them. But now!....
