I have seemed to notice a a water theme in much Islamic Architecture. Is there a connection between the two? What do you think.

I wrote an article entitled Paradise Gardens to showcase Alia's articles on Islamic gardens. I also added links about the use of water in Islamic gardens. Water is central to Islamic gardens, and Islamic gardens are often characterized by a interpenetration of indoor and outdoor spaces; there aren't sharp divisions between Islamic gardens and architecture.

Thanks Kirk for addressing that question. I'd like to comment further about the use of water in Islamic Architecture/Gardens. As Kirk said the use of water is consistent in both gardens and architecture primarily because as he said there is no sharp division between the two. Examples like the Alhambra show this hazy division between indoor and outdoor with the use of fountains and pools in interior spaces(courtyards). If one considers two important factors one can see why water has been so often used in Islamic architecture. First the earliest Muslims were "desert" Arabs so water was highly valued. Secondly in the Koran depictions of Paradise referred to rivers and flowing water giving it a religious value and gardens were often seen as recreations of Paradise on earth. So its easy to see how this theme became such an important one in Islamic architecture and so widely used.

It also wasn't unusual for Islamic palaces to have indoor fountains. In very dry climates this helps to cool the air.

» scrivener - "Way to water"

The Shriah
is
the law of Islam.

it was quoted in the audio piece at
http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/religi...
that the word
Shariah
means
"way to water"

and perhaps this provides some insight about the use of water and water-like elements, in Islamic architecture.

» Craobh - water in religious Architecture

Greetings.

I am a Portuguesarchitectct and I have been recently involved in the project of a temple for no specific religion.

I ended up here much because water is, in fact, not only a primal element in Islamic Architecture, but in most of religions (mostly as a purifying element).

Therefore, water is the key element in the project I am developing. However, with the exception of the Church in the WatTadao Andoo Ando, info and pictures of religious structures with water presence are, indeed scarce or hard to find.

If anyone could provide me such information, I would appreciate it.

Thank you.
