Sick Oscar

» talvi - I have two tiger oscars in a 75 gal tank, they are approx 2 yrs I have two tiger oscars in a 75 gal tank, they are approx 2 yrs old, and have been very healthy, till now.One is doing fine, the other has been acting very odd, it appears to be disoriented, swimming into the glass, swimming vertically etc.. He has no appetite, and is very hard to get any response from, so different from just walking into the room and having him staring from the tank in curiosity. I check the water weekly, and change approx 20% every two weeks, the other oscar is fine, for now? Thank You, Talvi Neisler -- posted by talvi » Winston - Sick Oscar Talvi,Sounds like you have had a bit of bad luck. I would have responded earlier, but vacation has kept me away. You are doing the proper things to maintain your aquarium. Please let me know how your oscars are doing currently. It is important that you medicate and isolate (if possible) the sick fish. Winston -- posted by Winston » talvi - Sick Oscar Winston,Wellll, the oscar has died, I still havent a clue as to what happened, the other oscar and the pleco are doing fine, but I see now that I need another tank for a quarantine! Anyway thanks for your response, and Im glad you have this site, as I am very interested in expanding my knowledge about aquatic life, and Im sure I'll have lots of questions! I noticed in your profile you said you had two albino oscars in with a firemouth, I was thinking about getting a couple cichlids to put with the oscars/oscar 8), but was advised against it by my local pet shop. I really like cichlids, but really want my next tank will be saltwater, so are there certain cichlids that can share a tank with oscars? -- posted by talvi » Winston - Oscars and other cichlids Talvi,The key to being able to put other cichlids with oscars is to judge the potential size of the fish. By this I mean that oscars tend to grow rather quickly. As a result, you generally have to start with a cichlid (such as a firemouth) that is somewhat larger than the oscars, initially. This is due to the fact that while the oscars grow quickly, the other cichlids will not. Another issue is the size of the aquarium. Cichlids can be rather territorial, so you have to make sure that you do not put too many fish in too small an area. Good luck, Winston -- posted by Winston » chicchatus - i think i have a sick oscar.... ok so we just got an oscar and i think 3 cichids or whatever they are called, from my dad's friend. i am pretty sure the tank is normal and everything is level, my moms is good at being precise; however, the oscar all of the sudden has been spazzing out and darting aimlessly around the tank and there are particles floating in the tank so i think he might be throwing up if that is even possible. the other fish are all huddled together like they are scared and i don't know what to do. earlier the oscar was like leaning against the glass then he started to tilt, then he looked out of the glass with his nose right on the glass. but it is really wierd how all of the other fish are so close together, and it is not like they are staying away from him either. and when he is spazzing out he runs into the things in the tank. i don't know what to do so if anyone has advice please share. thank you-- posted by chicchatus
