» ahunter - Plumbing Problem

The problem with my toilet is I have to flip the handle up after flushing to get the toilet to stop running water. A maintenance man has been in twice to fix it, but once the result was I couldn't get my toilet to stop running water and the second time the result was a temporary fix. In other words, for a few days, I was able to correctly flush my toilet but then I had to revert back to flipping the handle. Any suggestions?

Hmmm...I wasn't sure what you meant by "flipping the handle"? If you mean jiggling it, you might have a loose chain. Check your chain inside the tank. It might need to be shortened. Otherwise, check the ball-holder. Is the screw tight? If that isn't the problem, check the stopper (the rubber part). Is it completely covering the drain? The mechanism might need to be realigned if the stopper isn't directly over the drain. Otherwise, check the handle itself. Is the handle-rod bent? Is it broken?

» malcolmx - My toilet does not have the ball cock mechanism.

My toilet does not have the ball cock mechanism. It has the plastic tube, the tower and some sort of flush mechanism (white plastic) at the bottom of the tank. I have replaced the handle and arm, the flapper and adjusted the chain at different lenghts. I cannot stop the toilet from running. I had to shut it off completely. I have a limited income and am renting from a very nice lady who lives out of town. When her sons come down for maintenance, they have to drive for hours. I don't want to ask them to drive all the way here only to find out I could have done it myself. I have never seen this type of mechanism before. It looks quite "simple" and plain. Is there anyone who can suggest alternatives before I make that phone call? I wish I could e-mail you the schematics of the inside of the tank. But all I know is it says: Fill Pro. Thanks Linda
