Shaker Furniture, Part II: Faith in FormRead the article this discussion is about

» jerrib - I really love the simplicity of Shaker furniture and the beautiful workmanship. It was interesting to read of their prime use of space, too. But I have to admit if I had pegs all around the rooms I would surely go stir-crazy wanting to put everything away where I couldn't see it!-- posted by jerrib » Fort_Spunky - Shaker Furniture Hi Barbara,A number of years ago, probably in the late 1970s, I visited the Shaker Village at Pleasant Hill, Kentucky. The buildings were beautiful in their simplicity. I remember one that had a double cantilevered spiral staircase. I'd love to go back and see it all again. I noticed on their Web site that they have lodging at the Village. And the food in the dining room was well-known in the area for being excellent. Always enjoy your articles. They focused on just 3 of the sites, including Pleasant Hill. That wonderful spiral staircase was a prominant feature! I wish I'd seen the program before finishing my article...but I disagreed with their concentration on the business end of the Shakers' world - would have preferred to know more about their spiritual world and its influence on the business. -- posted by Barbara Bell
