» CarolWallace - Vintage clothing
You've hit upon a major weakness of mine here! I've always loved vintage clothing. I marvel at all of the work and fabric that went into Victorian clothing - and that before sewing machines! Or dry cleaning, I suspect. But one thing I enjoy is how the clothing actually can teach you about history. History is cyclical - and so is fashion - and often what becomes fashionable in one era is a response to the same types of conditions that held when it was fashionable earlier. And there is one of the joys of vintage. Around here, at least, it is possible to still pick up some nice pieces quite affordably. I remember when Vogue was showing gauzy dresses with handkerchief hems at major prices, I picked up one from the late 20s for $25. The style was so new there weren't many knock-offs available yet, so most people assumed that mine was couture. ;-)
And I could tell you about the time I taught an advertising class wearing an Edwardian ballgown. . .
ANd if you can find the "bras" of the '20s they are better than any minimizer I can find today.
I could go on and on.
