First, welcome to the Suite, Shannon. I love animation and marvel at the folks with the vision, talent and patience to create characters and stories to rival "live" talent.

Second, your story of getting your feet under you in L.A. rang some bells with me. Been there, done that. Wish I had had the pointers you provide in your article. It's a tough burg particularly if your aim is The Industry and you come from a town with a whopping three stoplights. Good for you!

Another useful housing resource is the Recycler, which is online now. Don't have the link but it's fairly easy to find using Yahoo. You're right, the L.A. Times is a bear to navigate and, IMHO, the housing ads fairly limited to those with more resources than most.

Again, welcome and kudos on a very informative article. Good luck with your animation career. From what I know about it, the life can be grueling but, if animation is your vocation, the rewards well worth the adventure.

Best,

» shannonmuir - Another resource came to mind...

LA WEEKLY is also online at:

Along with ads, it gives a good flavor of the diversity of the LA area.

» RachelKadushin - Other links to find jobs in LA

... Hollywood Reporter allows you to use their classifieds and read their headlines without being a subscriber.

The below boards allow people to post jobs for free, so be-aware that not all jobs will be paying and some may not be from honest employers.

... http://www.entertainmentcareers.net
Review: while some people post their jobs here directly, this site goes to entertainment company websites, clicks on their "jobs" buttons and cc's the information to the board. Some entertainment companies, such as LucasFilm, prefer you to log in your job requests via their own boards. The nice thing about this board is it tells you clearly WHERE the job is. Not all are in the LA area, but more than half of the jobs listed there are in LA. If you are not familiar with where entertainment companies have their job boards this is a good place to start looking.

... try http://HCDonline.com
They have a free job board. This one is particularly good in that it has a tech section, and pretty good section categories over all. If you have editing or sound engineering skills, this is the place for you.

... http://showbizjobs.com
Some of the higher management jobs show up here because they run an employment/recruiting agency in addition to the job board. This site features a search engine, but it has a lot of limitations. It's still more focused then an general search engine for jobs. Showbiz jobs also combs entertainment company sites for listings, but often has a larger selection of jobs that do not have e-mail contacts. Get ready to fax your cover letters!

In response to message posted by RachelKadushin:

Thanks for stopping by, Rachel!

I'm very glad you listed the three boards you did, but I also shied away from them for much the same logic. But they really are some of the better sources out there... as long as you keep your eyes peeled. I do find Rachel's assessments to be quite accurate.

Sometimes you can also find jobs on Mandy's Film and TV Production Directory but many of these are low/no/deferred pay, and it's also international in scope. Mandy.com is also very picky about how you enter a query, if you make one mistake even before submitting you have to reset the whole page... at least in my experience.

Also, Variety only allows you in the classifieds section now for free and that's it. Anything else from the Variety site costs.
