Debate on Skunks
This archived discussion is "read only".
» QuartzNH - Skunks Okay, I'm in a middle of a debate with my boyfriend. I don't know where else to go, other that talking to people I know...so I thought maybe this place could help. It's very silly. He is thoroughly convinced that Skunks do not spray. He is convinced that they wet their tails and fling it. Okay, fine. I didn't believe him, for several reasons. He has mentioned that this is one of the biggest misconceptions with skunks. Being a big skeptic and a person who likes to be right, I did TONS of research. And every website I found told me that the biggest misconception about skunks that people have are, Skunks are born with rabies and Skunks don't spray but rather wet their tails fling it. I sent him the websites...I even found a video that shows a skunks spraying. I told him that all these experts and people who deal with animals wouldn't be telling us that they spray when they don't. I told him to prove this to me. Also, I suggested him to call Fish and Game, the Audubon Society and different vets in the area. But he's not going to do this. After I sent the website links, etc, he still insist that I'm wrong and that he doesn't know WHERE I got my information. HELP! Erica -- posted by QuartzNH » Dantessa - Re: Skunks Erica, it sounds to me like your boyfriend just doesn't like to admit when he's wrong! :-)Skunks do spray but short of getting sprayed himself I guess you won't be able to prove it to your boyfriend, if he chooses not to believe the information from your sources. Here are some links to further your quest for the truth: http://www.wildlifedamagecontrol.com/sku... http://www.expage.com/page/mrsganimalsku... http://www.schoolnet.ca/vp-pv/mammals/e/... http://www.aspenskunk.org/myths.htm (rabies myths) http://www.fishbc.com/adventure/wilderne... http://flfl.essortment.com/skunkssmell_r... http://www.projectwildlife.org/living-sk... A family of skunks shares our living space with us (we let them live in our basement/crawl space under our porch) and they are just as cute and sweet as could be. We don't bother them and they don't bother us, though we do put out food for them (and our racoons, opossum, squirrels, muskrates, weasel, and countless other creatures that live under our porch and on the property, too). Neither us nor our cats have ever been sprayed, knock on wood. So unfortunately I cannot tell you from first-hand experience whether or not skunks spray or swish! I hope those links better your understanding. -- posted by Dantessa » biogardener - Might as well talk to a wall You might as well talk to a wall. Your boyfriend does not want to know the truth. He just wants to be argumentative. If he were interested in the truth, he would have looked for it in any encyclopedia long ago.I would be very careful about being friends with someone who is this pugnacious. -- posted by biogardener » biogardener - My dingbats To get those dingbats, I copied and pasted them from MS Word. I get all my foreign symbols from there, too. There is a big list of symbols available in MS Word under "Insert." I have made myself a collection of all the ones I might ever use in a Word document from which I copy as needed.-- posted by biogardener » biogardener - Use for Dingbats I try to put some kind of order into my signature by filling empty spaces with dingbats which are somewhat meaningful to the topic. And if they aren't meaningful, at least they are fun. Of course, they annoy people who don't want to have fun, but that is their problem, not mine, LOL.Talking about fun, your topic signature pic appears to be an assortment of picturesque dingbats. I love it. I am still waiting for some of those creatures to gobble up some of the others. You have created a volatile situation in that graphic. Careful! -- posted by biogardener » thebattwoman - Re: Skunks In response to message posted by QuartzNH:Oh they definitely spray, I just got through cleaning my dog! I went to let her out the other evening via the garage and there sat a skunk eating her dog food. Before I could even say, "No!" the dog was after it. I distinctly saw the spray hit my dog in the chops, and she distinctly felt it because she was frothing at the mouth Your boyfriend sounds like my husband and I'm afraid the only way he'll listen is to have him experience it first hand. Is he up for a dare? -- posted by thebattwoman
