» RevNancyLeigh - Property

A Great Article, and much needed to get the word out. Unfortunately, animals are still regarded as human property and not living creatures by most courts, and if they are not "worth" anything by financial standards, even though their lives are worth everything to those who love them, the person commiting the act will not be prosecuted or punished in any way. We do indeed need more strict enforcement of this...unfortunately, there are still those people who say,"Its only an animal"...I am looking forward to more of your work! I am a neighbor over in the humanities section. Welcome!
Blessings!

» biogardener - Keep your eyes open.

I am a teacher and I have always kept my eyes open
for children who mistreat animals. There is very
little difference between being cruel to one creature or another. Just this summer, two neighborhood brothers threw a 2x2 at me while I was working in the garden. They barely missed me, but I noticed that my poor cat, Dusty, had a swollen head and was unable to open her left eye. She was badly wounded and has taken these last 6 months to recover. The fur has just grown in to cover the scar. Fortunately she didn't lose her
eyesight.

The worst thing about this experience is that I dare not report those boys to the police. I know that they have a violent father and I don't want my windows smashed or my vehicle damaged. I also have a habit of taking walks in the evening and I don't want to be found in a backlane some night.

I just make sure that I warn all the children in the neighborhood to look out for their pets. They know I am not kidding. They all saw my Dusty's open wound and her closed eye.

How did I get those boys off me? My husband happened to come by and he beckoned them to come closer. That scared them away. Seems that cruelty is associated with cowardice. Heroes can afford to be kind.

Your experience seems to reinforce my research
on this subject. Sorry to hear about your cat!
I remember seeing a service on one of the sites where this lady will report such incidents for you. I think she was called Doggy Mom and from Dallas, Tx. I didn't make a note of it or pay close attention to it, but I think that is the right name. I've heard of other violent acts by teens towards pets and it is awful. I wonder if some of our youth haven't been desensitized by some of the gore they see on video games and on television. Of course, if parents don't work with you to correct this behavior, it makes it even more difficult, if not impossible, to fix the problem.

Nancy -

Thank you for your comments. Your right about some attitudes. Hopefully, more people will become aware of the violence against animals, and understand how serious it really is. - ED
