» ibland - to move or not to move

Hi. I am dating an american who lives in Paris. We are contemplating my moving to the city with my two daughters 4 and 6 to live with him.

I am really uncertain as to what life in Paris would be like, with kids. My kids do not speak french, although we would like them to learn. What is public school like? What is Parisien´life like with kids? Are the french mothers and kids friendly and open to foreigners? What kind of after school programs are there?

I am very confused as to whether or not to take this big step. Has anyone out there gone through this with young kids?

Thanks

Hi,

Well, first off, the culture is different here. Parisiens are much less "open" than the average American - for example, neighbors in the same apartment building may live near each other for 10 years and never speak with the exception of an occasional "bonjour".

As for education, they say public schoools in France are more demanding than those in the US.

Happily, there are private, bi-lingual schools available. The American Church of Paris (non-denominational) has a good list of sources, as well as a pre-school.

It may be a good idea to visit Paris first for at least a couple of weeks. During this time you could visit the American Consulate in Paris (the link is included on this website), the American Church, or other Franco-American organizations here.

The magazine F.U.S.A.C. has a number of classified ads that could help as well. The magazine is available at nearly all American restaurants, bars and organizations in Paris.

Good luck and feel free to contact me if you need other information.

Sara

» jointski - Religious Ceremony in Paris

I am aware of the requirements to have a French marriage (living 30 days in France,etc.). I am actually having a civil ceremony performed in New York on Sept. 18 and will be travelling to Paris later that day. Is it possible to have a religious ceremony performed on Sat. Sept. 21 by a non-denominational priest? If yes, can you provide information on these house of worships?

You should read the book "As the Romans Do" by Alan Epstien. It is one of my favorites. It is about a couple who moved to Rome with their two kids from San Fransisco.
