You are absolutely right and I probably should clarify that in the article. Technically, Andrew Johnson was a War Democrat. The Republicans attracted many Democrats by running as the Union party in 1864 and by placing Johnson on the ticket. It does make you wonder what would have happened if Lincoln had not been assassinated. I tend to believe that Lincoln would have found a way to defuse the situation with the Radicals. Nevertheless, you have to say Johnson had guts. I mean here is a man who was almost impeached and then in 1875 returned to Washington as a Senator. Talk about an awkward moment!
