In response to message posted by oddbuthot:

I would suggest you read Mike's whole series on the Causes of the Civil War. Start with this one:

http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/amer...

He did a good job of introducing the many factors which contributed to the economic and cultural divide between the northern and southern states.

I would also recommend you check out the link that Mike provides on his Welcome page - the one that is titled "Causes of the Civil War."

Happy reading!

I just found this site. It is fantastic. Too bad there are't many people useing it. I really enjoy reading about the war.
I am a member of "Sons of Confederate Vererans" and am involved in reinactment.

In response to civil war posted by oddbuthot:

The South wanted to secceed from the Union because after the compromise of 1850, the South was no longer equally represented in the Senete. They had permanently lost the House because the North had a larger population and the South was afraid that if the North got the President, and all of Congress, then they would pass an act to outlaw slavery, the south tried as hard as they could to hold on to the Senete, but in the end the North gained the Senete. This is not the only reason why but it is one of the reasons why the South secceeded.
