» Georgene A. Bramlage - What's happening in the southern hemisphere

Enjoyable article, Gregg...

However, not even being able to classify myself as an amateur astronomer, I have a question...

While we in the northern hemisphere can see Mars in all its glory this month, what about the skywatchers in the southern hemisphere? What are they seeing?

Thanks for the answer...I'd like to put something on the Garden COI page about this event.

In response to message posted by Cercis:

They are seeing it higher in the sky; they have the better view. The worst that can be said for Mars' apparition currently is that it is rather further south in the sky than northern observers would prefer. It's not hugging the southern horizon, but a treeline or foothills could hide the fiery jewel.

Same thing happened when Halley's Comet was at its best back in the mid-80's; the southern hemisphere got to enjoy the best of the show ...

Also hold true for some meteor showers we can't see here at all, others, like the Aquarids, are much better below the equator. On the other hand, they don't get much from the Perseids of August...

If you've not seen Mars from a dark, Milky Way-smoky location, do it! If you have, then ya know why I am so adamant about it. It's gorgeous.
Okay?

Gregg,

Thanks for the info...I'll have to figure out some way to work it into the Garden COI page next week...long week-end (I hope) for me.

It is so nice to have our own in-house astronomer :+)

Thanks again!

I see ya got the Mars stuff on the COI page. Nice job ... ya know, ya are doin' a very nice job with it all.

...yeah, I was an astronomer long berfore I was a gardener or wilkflower lover...

Oh, check the link to Mars article at the COI page ... it didn't work for me just now. Might be an extra character in the URL...

THanks
