» Karen_Largent - Thanks Ken!

Thanks Ken, even after almost two years, I still worry that my articles are too "technical" for the laymen reader who doesn't have a medical background. It can be tricky to decipher what all the latest research is about. Thanks for reading!

» Prometheus - Why it's important to distinguish these.

One thing you left out of your article is that it
is important to distinguish between the different
sorts of dementias resembling Alzheimers because
some of them may be treatable or have different
progressions.

It is also very hard to distinguish many of these,
or be certain of a diagnosis of Alzheimers until
autopsy.

I wish I had seen this two or three years ago,
when my father's progressive dementia became obvious.
I knew that it could be something other than Alheimers,
but lacking a list to start with, I more or less
wasn't able to analyze it, and remained in denial
that it was Alzheimers until the autopsy.

» caregiver - Non-Alzheimers Dementia

Karen, in reading your June 10, 1999 article I noticed no mention of Primary Progressive Aphasia.

Is PPA classed as Non-Alzheimers dementia?

My wife, at 55 started having word and comprehension problems. She has clinical presentations of many of the symptoms that resemble Alzheimers, yet the doctor continues to say PPA.

She has now declined to a stage 5/6 on the Reisberg scale.

Any Help?

Larry
